Michael Yevich, 96, of Honesdale, entered into eternal rest on Friday, Dec. 18, at Wayne Memorial Hospital after sustaining a fall and subsequent complications of pneumonia. His wife, Joyce Carol Altemose Yevich, with whom he shared more than 60 years of marriage, died on Nov. 8, 2017.
Mike (Mickey) was born in Taylor, Pa., in 1924 and was the son of the late John and Margaret Yevich. He is survived by his only daughter, Jill Yevich George; son-in-law, Jeffrey George, of Honesdale; and two granddaughters, Devan George, of Honesdale; and Sienna Helfrich, along with her husband, Nathan Helfrich, of Plaquemine, La. He was preceded in death by siblings, John Yevich, Mary Miller, Anna Yevich, Margaret Novak and Helen Ann Yevich; and he is survived by siblings, Irene Tomaszewski, Emily Wanish and William Yevich. Mike was blessed to have 13 nieces and nephews in his life.
Mike was a World War II veteran, private first class, 90th Infantry Division Radioman in the 1st and 3rd Army under General Patton. He was wounded and lost the sight in his left eye during the Battle of the Bulge in Normandy, France, where he was awarded two Purple Hearts and numerous other medals. Being a proud United States Army man, Mike has been a life member of the American Legion in Taylor and the Disabled American Veterans post in Honesdale. With the help of the GI Bill, Mike attended culinary school for baking and after returning home gained employment at Buck Hill Falls in the Poconos where he met his wife, Joyce, in 1957. He continued his baking career shortly thereafter at Cove Haven Resort in Lakeville, Pa., where he remained until retirement. Mike was fortunate to have spent almost 30 years of retired life wintering in Bradenton, Florida, where he enjoyed walking, bowling, golfing, bingo, shuffleboard, attending baseball games and particularly eating at restaurants with all his friends. He and Joyce always knew the best restaurants in town. In the warmer months, he lived in Pennsylvania, enjoying similar hobbies as well as volunteering for Meals on Wheels and in later years, attending the congregate lunch at the Honesdale Senior Center.
A private funeral service will be held at the Semian Funeral Home LLC, 704 Union St., Taylor, by the Very Rev. Mark Leasure, followed by burial in the Bethany Cemetery, Bethany, at a date to be determined.
