Peter Gilroy Obituary

Peter J. Gilroy, 74, of Archbald, passed away peacefully Thursday evening, May 3, at home with his family by his side. He fought a long, courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. His wife is the former Jane Harrington. They celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary in February.

Born in Carbondale, June 7, 1943, son of the late Gerald and Marion Farrell Gilroy, he was a graduate of Archbald High School class of 1961 and Lackawanna College. He served in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, 109th Infantry Regiment. He was a member of the Archbald Notre Dame Club and a lifelong member of Christ the King (formerly St. Thomas Aquinas) Parish.

A lifelong resident of Archbald, he grew up working in the family grocery business, Gilroy's Market, before taking over in 1974 until his retirement. He enjoyed golfing and spending time with friends and family at Newton Lake. He had a passion for singing, especially Irish tunes, and enjoyed times at the old fashioned sing-a-longs at the Crystal Lake Hotel.

Also surviving are two sons, Michael and wife, Monica, Ashburn, Va.; and Kevin and wife, Lisa, Boothwyn; a daughter, Maureen Mills and husband, Ron, Archbald; ten grandchildren, Benjamin, Isabelle, Joseph, Thomas and Gwendolyn Gilroy; Declan and Gianna Gilroy; Logan, Colin and Molly Mills; three brothers, Gerald and wife, Cindy, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; William and wife, Ginna, Archbald; and Hubert and wife, Mary, Carlisle; nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was also preceded in death by an infant sister, Marion; and two brothers, Michael and James.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Paul Remick and the Hospice of the Sacred Heart staff, especially Missy Smith, Jeanne Sembrat and Kathryn Nielson for their dedicated compassion and outstanding care.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 9 a.m. from Harrison Funeral Home, 374 Main St., Archbald, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 in St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Archbald. Interment, St. Thomas Aquinas Cemetery.

Family and friends are respectfully invited to pay their respects Monday from 5 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 600 Baltimore Drive, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.

Peter Gilroy was a kind and noble man. He was a father,a son,a grandson,a husband,a brother,a grandfather,a jokester, and a person that would make your world look up even if you were staring down. When hope was all lost and everything was sad he will always cheer you up and that is not a lie.

Jane - you may not remember me but we were married on the same day at St. Pat's and shared the cost of church flowers. I often thought of you and was saddened to hear of Peter's passing. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
