Raymond Makowski Obituary

After a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease, Raymond passed away Friday evening surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren. He had been a resident at Mountain View Care Center for the past year and a half.

Born in his family home on June 19, 1939, he was the youngest of seven children.

Surviving is his wife, Gloria, the former Gloria Wheeler. The couple celebrated 60 years of marriage in December. He was the son of the late Joseph and Lydia Makowski. He was a graduate of West Scranton High School, class of 1957, where he was active in band and track and field. After high school he joined the United States Army National Guard where he served for six years. He was a lifelong member of St. Stanislaus Polish National Catholic Church. He dedicated his life to the church. He volunteered in many aspects - usher, choir, synods, parish committee and he was PTA president for the parish day school for many years.

He was a printer by trade, working at the Straz newspaper for more than 20 years. Prior to his retirement, he worked for the NEIU school district and Applewood Acres.

He was an avid Penn State and NASCAR fan. He loved to fish, camp and hunt. Famous for his kielbasa making, harmonica playing and gardening, he was loved by all who knew him.

In addition to Gloria, he is survived by son, Raymond Jr., and wife, Patricia, Scranton; daughters, Joanne Millan, Scranton; Christine Patrick, Newton; and Wanda Petrillo, Scranton. His eight grandchildren include Troy, Felicia, Rachel, Hannah, Shelby, Jessie, Kylie and Jordan; and beloved great-granddaughter, Chloe. He was especially close to nephew, Hank Makowski; and niece, Donna Mukherji.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Henry, Joseph, Alfred, Bernie; and sisters, Winifred and Delores. He was also preceded in death by beloved son-in-law, Jerome Patrick; and sister-in-law, Delores Bianca.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at the Mountain View Care Center for their kindness and excellent care.

The funeral will be Thursday, Oct. 13, 2022, with Mass celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Polish National Catholic Cathedral, 529 E. Locust St., Scranton, by the Most Rev. Anthony Mikovsky. Interment, parish cemetery, Kane Street, Scranton.
