Richard Palutis Obituary

Richard J. Palutis, 85, a lifelong resident of Scranton, passed away Thursday evening at Allied Hospice Center, Scranton, after an illness. His loving wife of 64 years, Audrey (Sinclair) Palutis, survives.

Born in Scranton on Dec. 6, 1937 and son of the late Bernard Sr., and Virginia (O'Hara) Palutis, Richard was a 1955 graduate of the former Scranton Central High School. He proudly served during the Korean War in the United States Army, playing in the Band in the Brass Section. Richard was the longtime original owner of the Keyser Valley Deli, a West Scranton staple for decades. His dedication and work ethic unrivaled, he developed countless lasting friendships during his days at "The Deli," some of the best days of his life.

Of Roman Catholic faith, he was also a longtime member of St. Patrick's Parish, Scranton.

A loving husband, father, and grandfather, Richard devoted his life to his family. They were his everything, especially his grandchildren. While he was well, he enjoyed the annual family trip to Aruba. Richard had a passion for dancing, especially to the Polkas. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Surviving are sons-in-law, James Sagona, and Carl Zenker, and companion, Mariellen Donovan, all of Scranton; grandchildren, James Sagona, and fiancee, Amanda Hallock; Carl Zenker, and wife, Jamie; and Adam Zenker; several nieces and nephews.

His beloved daughters, Karen Zenker and Sharon Sagona; and brothers, H. Donald, Paul John, and Bernard Palutis Jr., preceded him in death.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the care and compassion shown to Richard during his stay at Allied Hospice, especially to Jonathan, Nicole, Maria and Dawn. They were angels in human form and their kindness will always be remembered by Richard's family.

A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel, Oram Street, Scranton, to be celebrated by Rev. Richard Fox, pastor. Interment with military honors by the AMVETS Honor Guard will follow in Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.

Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass in the church. Those attending the funeral are asked to go directly to the church.
