Richard Powell, 77, of Scranton, passed away peacefully on Jan. 24, 2022. He is survived by his wife, the former Carole Phillips. They would have celebrated thier 56th wedding anniversary in May of 2022. She was his great love and they were inseparable.
Born March 21, 1944, in Scranton, he was the son of the late James and Rachel Thomas Powell. He grew up in West Scranton, known to many as "Blacky." He later moved to Mount Cobb, where he raised his children.
Rich dedicated more than 50 years to The Scranton Times before owning and operating Powell's Pub and Eatery, Taylor. In his teen years, Rich opened a hoagie shop. He loved to cook, especially making his Italian hoagies and award winning wings. He enjoyed shooting pool and loved golfing and especially looked forward to his golfing trips to Myrtle Beach. He was also a member of the Delores Social Club. He was the most loving, patient and strong husband, father and pappy. He always had a smile on his face and was quick witted. Known as "Pappy" to his grandchildren, they were truly his pride and joy.
Also surviving are two children, Terri Powell, of Olyphant; and Mark Powell and wife, Carolyn, of Jefferson Twp.; four grandchildren, Erik Karvan and wife, Kassandra, of Buffalo, N.Y.; Kyle Karvan, of Olyphant; Macenzie and Nathaniel Powell, of Jefferson Twp.; brothers-in-law, Roger Phillips (Cheryl), Robert Phillips (Pat) and Jerry Philllips (Sandee); several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by brothers, James, Robert, John, Thomas, Paul, David; and granddaughter, Angel Powell.
The funeral will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. from the Jacob Davis Funeral Home, 422 S. Main St., Taylor, with services by the Rev. Donald Roberts, pastor of the
Taylor United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Milwaukee Cemetery.
Friends and family may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, the NEET Center, 1300 Old Plank Road, Mayfield, PA 18433.
Following CDC recommendments, face masks will be required for everyone attending the services.

Mark, Carolyn and family. Very sorry to hear of the loss of Richard. I enjoyed the times I met with him as he and Mrs. Powell were transitioning to managed car. Please pass my condolences on to Mrs. Powell. May he Rest in Peace.

Carole and family, my deepest sympathy on the passing of your dear, beloved Richard. I knew Rich since first grade at James Russell Elementary School and he was always a good friend. He always teased me about my carrot red hair. He has earned eternal life. Blessings
