Walter R. Gergats

Walter R. Gergats, 52, a resident of Dickson City, died Sunday morning at the VNA Hospice Unit at Community Medical Center. He and his wife, the former Lori Doncoes, celebrated 30 years of marriage on April 12.

Born in Scranton, son of Dolores Moskalczyk Gergats, Dickson City, and the late Walter Gergats, he was a member of St. Mary's Visitation Church, Dickson City, and was employed as a machinist at Nivert Metal Products, Throop. He was educated in St. Anthony's Parochial School, Passaic, N.J., and was a graduate of Passaic High School.

He was a loving and devoted father, grandfather and husband. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also loved working in his garden and taking his dogs for long walks.

He will be deeply missed by all his family and friends, always making everyone around him laugh and always there to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Also surviving are a daughter, Amy Backus and husband, Chad, Peckville; two sons, Walter P. Gergats, Dickson City; and Christopher Gergats, Olyphant; two grandchildren, Ireland and Bret Backus; a sister, Karen Mancuso and husband, Steven, Dickson City; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Thursday at 9 a.m. from the Frank T. Mazur Funeral Home Inc., 601 Dundaff St., Dickson City, with Mass at 9:30 in St. Mary's Visitation Church. Cremation will follow at Maple Hill Crematory, Archbald.
