Walter Matechak, 80, of S. Abington Twp., died on Monday, Dec. 26, 2022, at Allied Hospice, Scranton. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Buziak Matechak.
Born in Scott Twp., he was the son of the late William and Frances Yavorek Matechak, and he was a member of Our Lady of Snows Parish, Clarks Summit. He was a graduate of Scott High School where he excelled in baseball and basketball and earned two Globe Athlete of the week awards for baseball. He graduated from the University of Scranton with a BS degree in Social Studies and later graduated with an MS degree in guidance and counseling from Marywood University. Walter taught at Waymart High School for 10 years and at Western Wayne for 30 years.
Walter was a local youth sports coach in the Abingtons and coached many years in the Abington Baseball League, and the Abington Little League. He also was a PIAA umpire for many years refereeing the following sports, baseball, basketball, and track and field. He was inducted into the Northeastern Chapter of the PA Sports Hall of Fame for baseball and officiating.
He enjoyed his fishing trips to Lake Ontario for salmon, Downsville for browns, The Hudson River for stripes, and yearly Canadian fishing trips with his brother, Bill. Walter was a golfer who for many years enjoyed his annual trips to Myrtle Beach, St. Augustine, and Weston, Florida, and playing many courses in the Savannah area with his son David. Walter enjoyed traveling with his family and his wife, Lorraine. They made many trips to the wine country in California, along with other trips to San Francisco, and Las Vegas. They spent many summers at Cape May and various seashore destinations from Maine to Florida.
Walter and his wife Lorraine were married in Jersey City, N.J. in 1964. They celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on Nov. 1, 2022.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Andrew Matechak, Tompkinsville; his brother, Bill Matechak, Conklin, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, David Matechak.
The funeral will be Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023, with a Mass of Christian burial at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Snows Church, Clarks Summit, celebrated by Msgr. Joseph Quinn. Anyone attending the Mass should go directly to the church. Family and close friends may call on Monday, Jan. 2, 2023, at the Frank T. Mazur Funeral Home Inc., 601 Dundaff St., Dickson City, from 4 to 7 p.m. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Allied Services Hospice Center, 511 Morgan Hwy, Scranton, PA 18508.

Walt was the most thought-provoking teacher that I ever had. I have thought of him countless times throughout my life and have told numerous people about what he said about going back to a barter system. He cared as much about people as he did about his teaching. He will be sadly missed.
