Carl Mathiak Obituary

Carl F. Mathiak, Jr. Memphis Carl F. Mathiak, Jr., 78, passed away suddenly on Sunday, January 17, 2010. He was born in Detroit on February 27, 1931, a son to the late Carl and Else (Singlemann) Mathiak and spent his childhood in Wayne, Michigan. After serving in the Korean War with the U.S. Air Force, Carl married Lois Ann Dorr on January 22, 1954. Following their marriage, they moved to Memphis, MI where they raised their son, Carl III and resided for 55 years. Mr. Mathiak was an avid hunter, golfer and bowler. He possessed a renowned "green thumb" regarding his gardening and was an active participant in the activities of his beloved grandchildren, Emilie and Trevor. Carl owned and operated the Memphis Marathon Lumber Company for 10 years and after he sold the business, he and Lois started "wintering" in Florida. The Memphis Lions Club was a very important part of his life and one of his proudest achievements was earning a Life Membership Award for outstanding service as a Lion. Carl leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife Lois; son, Carl III and his wife Shelley; grandchildren, Emilie and Trevor; sister-in-law, Betty Wallace in Florida; special couple, Barbara and Melvin Matthews of Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Dorothy Brown; and his brother-in-law, Edward Brown. A memorial service to honor Carl will be held on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, at 11 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church of Memphis, 81265 Church St., Memphis, MI 48041. The family will receive visitors in the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. Carl's family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the Memphis Lions Club, 34758 Pratt Rd., Memphis, MI 48041 or to the First United Methodist Church of Memphis, 81265 Church St., Memphis, MI 48041. Arrangements were entrusted to Kammeraad Funeral Home, Memphis, Michigan.

I will remember the wonderful Christmas dinners we shared to together at my grandmother's house when I was growing up in Michigan in the 1960's. I also enjoyed seeing you down in Florida several times. Thanks for the "Big Shot" toy when I was a kid. I still remember it.

We will always cherish all of the Christmasses and Easters that we spent together either at our home or the farm home of my parents when our children were growing up. We enjoyed the time with Carl and Lois in July. We are extremely sorry that we will be unable to attend the memorial. Betty Wallace and Henry Krauss.
