Jean Elizabeth Morri-
son Hotalen, age 89, long-
time resident of Toccoa,
Ga., passed away Tuesday,
Jan. 10, 2023 at The Oaks
Scenic View Skilled Nurs-
ing Facility in Baldwin,
Ga.
A daughter of the late
Erwin Barnes Morrison
and Dorothy Virginia
Moorman Morrison, she
was born in Springfield,
Ohio in 1933. Jean moved
with her family to Miami,
Florida when she was a
young girl. After high
school, she attended Toc-
coa Falls College where
she married William Nor-
wood "Bud" Hotalen.
Sensing God's call on
their lives to the mission
field and completing their
studies at Toccoa Falls
College, Jean and Bud
spent nearly 40 years serv-
ing the Lord in Africa,
first in the Democratic Re-
public of Congo and then
in the Cote d'Ivoire in vari-
ous ministries.
Retiring to Toccoa, Ga.
in 1994, Jean was an active
member of First Alliance
Church Toccoa, where she
was a pianist for worship
services and for the choir,
with an anointing of the
Holy Spirit. Jean loved
spending time in the Word
and in the presence of her
Lord and Savior, Jesus
Christ.
Jean leaves behind her
husband of 69½ years,
William Norwood "Bud"
Hotalen of Toccoa, Ga.; her
five children, Iris Joy
Freeman and her husband
Gary Freeman of Toccoa,
Ga., Stan Erwin Hotalen
and his wife Connie Hotal-
en of Toccoa, Ga., Nor-
wood Earl Hotalen and his
wife Lynn Hotalen of Bu-
ford, Ga., Terry Lynne
Newman and her husband
Barry Newman of Toccoa,
Ga., and Virginia Dianne
Warner and her husband
Mark Warner of Kansas
City, Kan.; 16 grandchil-
dren, 40 great-grandchil-
dren and one great-great-
grandchild.
The family would like
to express their deep grati-
tude to Dr. Harry McDon-
ald and his staff as well as
the staff of Amedisys Hos-
pice, The Clary Center,
Stephens County Hospital
and The Oaks at Scenic
View for the excellent, lov-
ing, attentive care given to
Jean Hotalen.
Memorial services were
held Tuesday, Jan. 24,
2023, at 11 a.m. at First Al-
liance Church Toccoa with
the Rev. John Harvey offi-
ciating.
