Dr. James Edward Lovill left this world peacefully on 22 January 2025, at age 82 in his home in Fairfax, California. James (Jim) was born on 13 February 1942, in Mountain City, Tennessee. He was the only child of the late Thomas E. and Irene Love Lovill.
Jim earned a PhD in atmospheric science from Colorado State University (1972). During his career, he held multiple research and teaching positions. He authored a book on ozone and co-authored another, presented 16 scientific papers, and had over 90 publications to his credit.
In the early 1960s, the National Science Foundation selected Jim to lead a team of scientists to Antarctica. There, he completed an 18-month data collection mission. The historical landmark, Lovill Bluff, off the coast of Westarctica, honors his service as meteorologist-in-charge at Byrd Station.
Preceded in death by his parents, Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Hope, and son, Sky, who resides in New Zealand. Jim Lovill left his mark on the world. He embraced life with a wise, yet whimsical attitude. He had a scientific mind, but lived an athletic, artistic lifestyle. We'll remember his love for the natural world as well as the arts, and the joy he brought to those who knew him.
