Patricia Wilder Muller

January 15, 1947 -

March 10, 2026

Patricia Wilder Muller, 79, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on March 10, 2026 due to complications from liver disease.

Born in 1947 in Weymouth, Massachusetts, she was the eldest daughter of Ralph Sprague and Frances Olive Wilder. From a young age, Patricia was curious about the wider world. As a teenager, she studied abroad in Germany, an experience that sparked a lifelong love of travel and culture. After graduating from Lincoln Memorial University in Tennessee and earning her master's degree from Miami University in Ohio, she continued her adventures abroad, teaching in Prague, Czechoslovakia, before eventually making her way to Key West, Florida.

In 1973, a young sailor arrived in the Key West harbor. Karl Muller had built a boat in Vancouver, Canada, and sailed it through the Panama Canal in search of warmer waters. Within six weeks of meeting he asked her to continue traveling with him to Costa Rica. She said yes, with one condition: they would marry first. He agreed. They were married that June and began a partnership that would span 53 years.

Together they traveled, built homes, gardened, boated, and embraced a life defined by independence and adventure. Patricia was deeply devoted to Karl, and their marriage was rooted in shared risk, resilience, and unwavering loyalty. Their love story began on the water and carried them through a lifetime of exploration.

An educator at heart, Patricia believed strongly in the power of literacy and learning for its own sake. She preferred working with young children and spent much of her career teaching kindergarten and second grade in Arkansas, Harkers Island, North Carolina, Mt. Rogers, Virginia, and Mt. Airy, North Carolina, where she eventually retired. She found particular joy in helping children discover the written word and believed education was one of life's greatest gifts.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Karl, and their only child, Heidi (Braydon) Muller Hoover of Harrisonburg, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the University Fund at Eastern Mennonite University, her daughter's alma mater, in honor of Patricia's enduring love of education.
