Gladys Hathorn Obituary

Graveside services for Gladys "Monnie" Barnett Hathorn will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 18, 2010, at Alexandria Memorial Gardens, Woodworth, with Reverend Chris Andrews officiating. Burial will be under the direction of Hixson Brothers, Alexandria.
Mrs. Hathorn, 86, of Baton Rouge, formerly of Alexandria, passed away Wednesday, September 15, 2010, at her residence.
"Monnie" was born into a farming family in rural Mississippi. After working her way through Business College, she went to work for Western Union during World War 2 making her own contribution to the war effort.
It was around this time that she met and, prior to his shipping out to Europe for the Normandy campaign, married Edgar Hathorn. After the war they moved to Alexandria where they were to have 5 children. Her married life revolved around the raising of these children involving herself in Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Vacation Bible School, and all the things motherhood entails. There was always extra food and plenty of love for the constant parade of her children's friends that came through her door.
While always a country girl at heart, she had many interests. Beyond her family and church, she had passions for painting, bird watching, sewing, gardening, music and travel. She found time also to serve in several ladies auxiliaries for the VFW, Civitan club, and others. In whatever spare time she had left she quietly did volunteer work at nursing homes, the Red Cross, and other places around Alexandria. Following the death of Edgar she assumed his seat on the Rapides Parish Police Jury.
She will especially be remembered for her quiet dignity, compassion for others, and love of God.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Baton Rouge. She was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Alexandria and later belonged to First United Methodist Church, Alexandria.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Edgar C. Hathorn, and second husband, Lyman Adams; parents, Stennis Marvin and Madie Mae George Barnett; brother Ralph Barnett; sisters, Laytanne McKee, Lorraine McKee, Lydia Grace McKee.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children Sherry Hathorn of Alexandria, Marsha Hathorn Hill and husband Steve of Portland, Oregon, Claudia "PeeWee" Hathorn of Baton Rouge, Bill Hathorn and wife Susan of Alexandria, Rhonda Renee Hathorn of Portland, Oregon; brother, James Stennis Barnett of Pineville; sister, Mary Jo Barnett Manning of Brandon, Mississippi; brother, Freddie Kenneth Barnett of Jackson, Mississippi; seven grandchildren, Richmond Yancy McNeal, William Stuart McNeal, Jonathan Michael Hill, Christopher Hathorn Hill, Samuel David Hathorn, John David Spurgeon, and Michaela Grace Hathorn.
Visitation will be for family only on Friday, September 17, 2010.
Memorials may be made to charity of donor's choice.

Sherry,Marsha,Pee-Wee,Bill,and Renee, I was so sorry to hear about your mother. I remember the good times we had at your house on Wilshire and how your mother was so involved in your lives. Her involvement with all of us at Trinity and her quiet, patient personality will always stay with me. My mother passed away two years ago in June and I still miss her so much. You will be in all of our prayers.

Ms. Monnie Hathorn was quite a lady. The Hathorn home was often a "central gathering place" for many of us in high school. Ms. Monnie eagerly welcomed many kids into her family's home, always had kind words, a loving smile, and definitely something good to eat in the kitchen. She will be sorely missed but very, very fondly remembered by all those she touched in her lifetime.

Mrs. Monnie was a sweet lady. I will always remember the times she and I chatted when she would come over while I was working in the yard. She always admired my roses and would love to pick them. We will think of her every time we pick the roses. May her love shine down on us all and give us peace.

Dear Hathorns...I'm saddened to hear of your loss. Ms. Monnie was such an influence growing up. It was hard for her to coral Renee and I, but she did it. I really loved going to the house, I always felt welcomed. Renee, I still have a painting that your mom gave my mom years ago. Also my family eats this yummy dessert that your mom gave us the recipe for...must be 30 years ago now! Please know that my heart and prayers are with you. Love you much, Missy Freebeck Adams
