Lawrence Yeager Obituary

Lawrence Rollo Yeager

Alexandria - Lawrence Rollo Yeager, age 94, passed away peacefully at home Tuesday, April 28, with his loving family at his side. Larry was born in Trout, Louisiana, to Oliver Sutherland and Genevieve Adams Yeager on August 22, 1925. He married the love of his life, Ruby Lee Scarber, on Christmas Day, December 25, 1946. Together they were blessed with one daughter, Karen Kaye (K.K.).

Larry was a proud Army veteran of World War II. He served under General Eisenhower in the 30th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army, known as "Old Hickory," fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and was honored to have helped in the liberation of concentration camps throughout Europe. He was a regular participant in "Old Hickory" reunions around the country and proudly wore his WWII veteran hat whenever possible.

Larry's faith was always the most important thing in his life. As a devoted member of Parkview Baptist Church for over 65 years, he humbly served his God as a long-time deacon, Sunday School teacher, and Training Union director. If you were ever around Larry on a Saturday, you would find him with his Bible and study book close by preparing for the next morning's lesson.

Following graduation from Louisiana College, Larry began his career with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. After 35 years of dedicated service, Larry retired from his position as area sales manager. Retirement did not slow him down; he spent the next 30 years traveling with his family, gardening, playing golf (including making a hole-in-one in 1989), attending as many LSU football games as possible, serving as a real estate agent in land sales, and proudly serving on the Board of Directors of the Food Bank of Central Louisiana.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver Sutherland Yeager and Genevieve Adams Yeager, and his brother Richard Oliver Yeager. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Scarber Yeager, and his daughter Karen Kaye (K.K.) White and her husband, Charles Nathan White II of Alexandria. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Dr. David Lawrence White and his wife, Dr. Gina McClure White, of Huntsville, Alabama; and Leigh Anne White Lee and her husband, James Edward Lee II, of Boston, Massachusetts; and three great-grandchildren, Nathan Lawrence White, Emmeline Virginia White, and Cora Lee White, of Huntsville, Alabama. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren affectionately called him "Big Daboo" because only an exceptional name could honor such an exceptional grandfather.

His family would like to thank Jeannie Ashworth, Brenda Hairford, Lynn Kirkpatrick, and Alexis Klein for their love and care of their beloved husband, father, and grandfather. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Larry Yeager to Parkview Baptist Church and the Food Bank of Central Louisiana. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Larry Yeager was known to so many as one of the kindest and most generous people. He will be greatly missed.

In all the time that I knew Big Daboo, aka Larry, I never knew what a true hero he was in life. I knew of his kindness and genuine generosity. There will be a void on the earth, but a welcome in heaven for such an authentic true example of a Christian soldier. I am so sad at his passing. I send heartfelt condolences to Ruby, KK, and her husband Charlie, Leigh Ann and her husband James, David and his wife Gina and the grandkids, Nathan, Emmeline and Cora. May God hold you all in the palm of his hand.
