Louis Henry Mathews, Sr., age 81, of Alexandria, passed away on Saturday, August 12, 2017, at his residence after a brief battle with cancer. He also struggled from dementia.
Louis was a humble, kind man who grew up on Bayou Rapides where he learned the importance of hard work, a good family and a strong faith. He attended St. Frances Xavier Academy and graduated from Menard High School in 1954.
After his family farm was confiscated by eminent domain for the expansion of England Air Force Base, he devoted 30 years of service to Cotton Bros. Holsum Bakery as a route salesman and supervisor. He developed many loyal friendships with coworkers as well as the folks at the stores he serviced around Central Louisiana. He was a great lover of the outdoors and enjoyed many hours spent hunting and fishing. As an avid gardener, he planted a vegetable garden yearly and harvested plenty to share.
Louis was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvester and Rosie Marien Mathews as well as his brothers, Buddy, Albert, Richard and a sister, Mary Theresa.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Girlie Mae Viola Mathews; his two sons, Joey Mathews (Mara), of Marshall, TX and Louis Mathews, Jr. (Lucy), of Arnaudville, LA as well as three daughters, Karen Thomisee (Ralph), of Pineville, LA, Rose Mary Bordelon (André), of Woodworth, LA, and Marye Armand, of Ball, LA. Louis was blessed with his beloved grandchildren: Ryan Mathews (Lisa), Karlye Ledet (Adam), Lauren Boudreaux (Scotty), Jacob Mathews (Christina), Branden Thomisee (Melinda), Tyler Thomisee, Shannon Davidson, James Bordelon (Sawyer), Bruce Bordelon (Sydney), Kristopher Prestridge (Megan) as well as several great grandchildren. His grandsons will serve as his pallbearers.
