Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Friday, April, 1, 2016, at St. James Episcopal Church, Alexandria, LA with The Most Reverend Deborah B. Heathcock officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Pineville, under the direction of John Kramer & Son Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 A.M. until time of service in the parish hall on Friday, April 1, 2016.
Robert Wayne "Bob" Ellsworth, Colonel, U.S. Air Force, passed away on Wednesday, March 23, 2016, at CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital, Alexandria, LA, of complications of Lou Gehrig's disease.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, Kathryn Willard Messick; his parents, Philip John Ellsworth, Jr., and Pearl Kilfoyle Ellsworth; a sister, Phyllis Ellsworth; his brother, Philip John Ellsworth, III; his nephew and namesake, Bobby Ellsworth, and his step son, Andy Craig, Sr.
He is survived by his wife, Stella Holmes Craig, with whom he shared 30 years, of Pineville, LA; his son, Philip John (PJ) Ellsworth, IV, of Carencro, LA; stepdaughter, Marilyn Messick DeMello, of Boerne, TX; stepson, Phillip L. Craig, of Pineville, LA; granddaughter, Meagan Ellsworth of Huntsville, TX; step grandchildren, Heather Craig and Andy Craig of Pineville, LA; Holly Craig, of Kenner, LA; brother and sister-in-law, Rex and Carol Ellsworth of Caro, Michigan; nephews, Michael Ellsworth of Colorado Springs, CO., and Paul Ellsworth, of Caro, Michigan; nieces Kim Shaito, Fort Worth, TX; Kathy Brown, Dry Prong, LA; Karen Parent, Ponchatoula, LA; Krista Slack, Lafayette, LA; Jeannie Ellsworth of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; Sister-in-law, Regina Ellsworth, of Dry Prong, LA; and, brother in law and sister-in-law, Clarence and Jean Willard of Hurst, TX.
He was born on December 13, 1928, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. A graduate of Oskaloosa High School, Bob lettered in three sports and was captain of the football team. He graduated from Central College, Pella Iowa, with a degree in biology, lettering in football and track. He received a Physical Therapy Degree from the University of Iowa, where he served on the Athletic Staff. After 8 years in private physical therapy practice in Moline, IL, Bob joined the U.S. Air Force as a physical therapist, and was the first physical therapist to be assigned to Vietnam. He achieved the rank of Colonel, retiring in 1983.
A life-long athlete, Bob was an excellent golfer with 5 holes in one on five different golf courses. Additionally, he qualified and played in 5 Senior Olympics in golf. Bob also was a choir soloist and sang in Barber Shop quartets. He enjoyed dancing, cross word puzzles, and watching football games.
Bob was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, Alexandria, LA; Mystique Krewe of Rapides; Krewe de Kincaid; Magnolia Dance Club; American Legion; Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Military Officers Association of America. He was a former member of the Rapides Golf and Country Club, and the Alexandria Golf and Country Club.
Pallbearers honored to serve will be Phillip Craig; P.J. Ellsworth; Mike Ellsworth; Keith Hobbs; Jim Bratcher; and, Sherrill Phelps.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to St. James Episcopal Church, 1620 Murray Street, Alexandria, LA 71301.
