Michael Mike Barkhurst passed away peacefully on December 31, 2025, at the age of 83.
Mike was a dedicated educator who served as Superintendent of the Nevada Joint Union High School District in Grass Valley for over two decades. He was a strong advocate for meaningful education and oversaw the expansion of the district, including the construction of Bear River High School, the addition of Sierra College programs to the NU campus, and the development of Regional Occupational Programs (ROP).
Mike is survived by his wife, Judy; his son, Jeremy; and his granddaughter, Dakota. The family made their home in Grass Valley for 31 years.
In retirement, Mike moved to Lincoln, where he became a state-certified personal trainer and taught Nordic walking.
A celebration of life will be held on May 16 at 1:00 p.m. in Nevada City. For information, please contact Jeremy at 916-300-2379.
