Harvey Sterkel, 85, of North Aurora passed away October 21, 2019.
Harvey P. Sterkel, 85 of North Aurora, passed away Monday, Oct. 21, 2019 at his home. He was born May 19, 1934 in Denver Colo., the son of the late Henry and Pauline (Mohr) Sterkel.
Harvey served his country with U.S. Navy. He married his high school sweetheart, Gloria Krieger, April 12, 1953. In 1956, Harvey was recruited by the Aurora Sealmaster fastpitch softball team and, along with Gloria and their young son, Robert, moved to Aurora. Pitching for Aurora, he posted a 345-33 won-loss record with 60 no hitters and 15 perfect games. Between 1965 and 1968 he won 52 consecutive games with an ERA of 0.34. Considered among the game's greatest pitchers, Harvey was inducted into the Denver Metro, Illinois, Asa National, and the International Softball Halls of Fame.
Harvey worked for Sealmaster Bearings in Aurora until 1978 when he joined Aurora Bearing Company. He retired from his position as VP of Aircraft Sales in 2015. For many years, Harvey directed the church choir, was a member of several barbershop quartets, arranged music, and was an accomplished woodworker. A talented, yet humble man, his greatest joy came from the family he cherished.
Harvey is survived by his wife, Gloria M. Sterkel; his children, Robert (Beth) Sterkel, Ronald (Kendra) Sterkel, Susan (Robert) Clow and Steven (Robin) Sterkel; his six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren; his brothers, Donald Sterkel and John (Nancy) Sterkel; many other family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Sterkel.
Visitation was Monday 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at The Healy Chapel, 370 Division Dr., Sugar Grove, IL 60554. Gloria and the Sterkle family, We met you and Harvey when we were in our early 20's, young, energetic, with families. The first time I met Harvey in 1957, I realized, he was a super person. I had the good fortune of joining the Sealmaster softball team/family. It was a great opportunity to play with Harvey and the team for seven years and two World Championships. Early on, it was realized that Harvey was not only the greatest fast pitch pitcher, a gentleman and a wonderful family man. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Best regards, Jack and Em DeNert, Venice, Florida

I am sad to hear of Harvey's passing. He was a prince amoung men. My Dad, Herb Cate, thought he was a wonderful friend, and he loved working with him at Sealmasters. I don't think Dad ever missed a Sealmaster game. My daughter Jennifer Gantz, worked at Aurora Bearing for a semester. Always had a kind word for her and a smile on his face. Please know our love and prayers are with your entire family.Gloria and Ron.

We treasure memories of worshiping with Harvey at Union Congregational Church. We especially enjoyed the music he shared through directing the choir for many years. A truly talented man in so many ways. We extend our sympathy to Gloria and the Sterkel family.

Gloria and family;
I extend my sympathy to you upon Harvey's passing. He was a good Christian gentleman and I think that St. Paul's words to Timothy are very appropriate:" I have fought the good fight; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith and the crown of righteousness awaits:". May God grant you and him peace.

A great loss of a great man, beyond his amazing pitching abilities. My condolences to the family. He brought Aurora to life, there was nothing to compare to weekend doubleheader's at Sealmaster Field. It was a privilege to grow up watching him, and eventually playing with him

My brother and I would drive from Plano to Prince Castle for hamburgers and fries, then head over to S-A Field to watch the Seamster play a double-header back in the 60s. We would pitch to each other in our front yard at home trying to be like Harvey Sterkel, using his famous sling-shot delivery. He was a giant of a man, both in stature and respect from others. His loss will be felt in many ways, but the memories he leaves to so many will go on. Thank you, Mr. Sterkel for a life well-lived.

First met Harvey in the early 1970's when he directed the Aurora Lamplighter Barbershop chorus. He was so nice to everyone that he couldn't have made an enemy. They broke the mold after he was made. Wish I had sung more with him as he had a beautiful lead voice. Condolences to Gloria and the family as we will all miss Harvey.

"There are no words that can express how saddened and heart broken I am for the Sterkel and Clow Families each and everyone are in my thought and prayers. Although my meeting with Mr. Harvey and his family was only the last couple of years, his love and acceptance will never be forgotten. One of my greatness memory of Mr. Harvey is the brightness and beautiful smiles on the faces of his great grandchildren when they see him. He will forever live on in them. I can honestly say he was a great man and will always be remembered. Mr. Harvey will be missed but he will be watching over his children, grandchildren and especially his great grandchildren."

My thoughts and prayers are with Harvey's family. I was Harvey's secretary when I graduated from high school in 1969. He was a wonderful man, great friend, the greatest softball legend that ever lived but most of all a man of God. He was quite an inspiration to many of us. He will always be remembered.
