Charles Trask Obituary

Charles Henry Trask, 92, of Windsor, CT, formerly of Stonington, died on Tuesday, August 5, 2014, at John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington. After a hip fracture from a fall in March, he worked hard in therapy at rehab facilities to recover but was eventually overwhelmed by complications.
He was born in Old Lyme, CT, on May 30, 1922, son of the late Charles Henry Trask and Edna Mabel (Fratus) Trask, and grew up in Old Saybrook. He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps prior to enlisting in the US Navy in 1942. Charles served in the South Pacific and was honorably discharged in 1945. He was a bartender for over 40 years and met his future wife, Diane, while working at the Connecticut Yankee Motor Inn. The happy couple married on November 7, 1964, in Old Lyme and was just three months shy of celebrating their golden wedding anniversary. Charlie was a social and charming man who achieved great success in his profession and was always happy to share his latest bloody Mary recipe. If the UConn women's basketball game was on, you would have to wait a bit.
Charles and Diane made their home in Stonington where he later retired from the Stonington Public School system as a custodian after more than 20 years of service. A proud veteran of World War II, Charles was a life member of the Stonington VFW Post #1265. Charlie could be counted on as great company for dinner, a reliable source for his home grown tomatoes, and too much zucchini.
He leaves to treasure his memory, a loving wife, Diane E. Trask, their son and his beloved daughter-in-law, Brian Trask and Ania Czajkowski of Canton, two dear friends, Barbara and Bob Doyen of Old Lyme, and his feline companion, Sam. He also leaves a daughter, Jeannie Ann Wheeler of Sorrento, FL, and her children and grandchildren. Charles was predeceased by two sisters, Mildred Spring and Elsie Augustine.

It is so good to remember Charlie, someone who was always there at SHS, he would notice if someone needed to be cheered up, and he did. He was fond of the Red Bull Wine from Hungary, I am so glad I got to know him. He is a great example how to live our life after retirement.

It is hard to believe Charles has left us with our memories 6 years ago already, I can clearly see him and recall conversations about the Hungarian Red Bull's Blood wine (Egry Bikavér) which was one of his favourites. Charles was a cheerful man, he could and would smile even in challenging times. I wish to live like he did as an elderly person.

Wishing continued peace at heart for all who miss him greatly.
Best wishes,
Anna Kaszásné Becsei from Budapest, Hungary

Dear Brian & Mrs.Trask , I just learned of Charlie's passing.
I so enjoyed talking to him but mostly listening to his wonderful stories every day at SHS. He lived life to the fullest. When he turned 80 we had a party for him in the cafeteria and he was so appreciative. He is one of those people who will be sorely missed.
Sincerely, Kathleen (Moran) Clark, French teacher

How I will always remember Charlie. This was on the Bermuda trip.

Mrs. Trask & Family: Each one of us must let the hand go of one that we love to one that we have not yet met. The memories that they leave behind is what love is made of.

I enjoyed speaking with him on numerous visits when he would bring the Honda in for service. He was a kind and caring man.

Please accept my sincere sympathy. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

Dear Diane, Brian and Ania:
I can't begin to tell you how sorry I am to hear of your loss. Charlie always had a good joke to tell and always had a smile on his face and a joke to tell. I loved all of the time we spent together during holidays while growing up and into adulthood. Charlie has always had a special place in my heart and he will be missed. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Love, Janice

Dear Diane and Family, Though we have never met in person I believe you remember Charlie talking to you about the Bull's Blood of Eger http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egri_Bikav%C3%A9r he loved so much. It was real joy for me to surprise Charlie with a bottle during my Fulbright exchange year, and upon the visit I paid at SHS with my husband in 2006. I remember Charlie as a charming man with much willpower, a big-big heart, great sense of humour, a devoted and reliable person. He is an outstanding example for how to live and work after retirement. Also, I keep remembering how he spoke about his wife, trus love was shining through his words. Truly, lot of people miss him, his encouraging words, helpfulness and smiling face. Please accept my condolences. Anna from Hungary, Europe
