David Wagner Obituary

David B. Wagner, 65, beloved husband of Beth (Hackman) Wagner, of South Drive, Ashaway, passed away at his home on Monday, November 4, 2019. He was born in Westerly to the late Burt and Dorothy (Pinky) Wagner.
He was an avid doubles tennis player in the 70's and 80's at Pond View Racquet Club. He first taught 5th grade in Chesterfield, Virginia from 1981-1987. He then moved back to Westerly, where he taught from 1988 until he had a stroke in 2004. He loved teaching math to many fifth graders during that time. He was a loyal Boston Red Sox fan. He spent hours watching the games and rehashing them with friends.
He will be sadly missed by his wife Beth of 36 years, and cousins, Paul Bernier (Sue), Kathy Korne (Steve), and Donna Harries.
Relatives and friends are invited to visiting hours on Wednesday, November 13 from 4-6pm at Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. Funeral service and burial will be private. For online condolences please visit www.gaffneydolanfuneralhome.com

Mrs. Wagner, I am so sorry to hear about Mr. Wagner's passing. I was a student of his 30 years ago at Babcock middle school. My closest friend and I met while in his class. We have such fond memories of our time with Mr. Wagner. We were able to come back and visit one day when we were on a break from college. We hadn't seen him in probably a decade, but he remembered us both, and recalled many of the conversations we had had while in his class. We, of course, talked about the Red Sox. Mr. Wagner was very excited about the addition of Johnny Damon to the team. We shared some laughs and even recalled the bumper sticker Mr. Wagner used to have on his car back in 1989, which read Answer my prayers and steal this car. He was such a funny, welcoming man and I am so sad to hear of his passing. I also recall his unbelievable ability to divide very large numbers in his head. It was outrageously impressive. Such a great guy.

I hope you find comfort in the memories you have with Mr. Wagner.

With Sympathy,

Ron Taylor

Beth,

I am so sorry to hear of Dave's passing. He is a true friend going back to our days at Westerly High School, URI and beyond. He was always happy to be in your company and made you feel as though you were the most important person in the room. He made me smile whenever we were together. I've said many times that with his passion for sports, coupled with his booming voice, he would have made a terrific broadcaster. However, I know that he loved teaching, the kids knew it as well and responded in kind. The world is a less compassionate place today without Dave Wags in it. All my best to you.

Beth my sincerest condolences for your loss. I spent many years of my youth with Dave growing up in the same neighborhood. Many days in his basement honing our ping pong and pool skills and Burt and Dave teaching me every card game you could imagine. Playing baseball in his yard, our first tennis days and basketball at the courts on Airport road, my first round of golf with Burt and Dave, my first baseball game at Fenway Burt and Dave, all great times when life was more simple. Rest in Peace Dave.

Mrs Wagner, you and Mr Wagner were very special to my son Frank when he was a student at Babcock. Your love and affection for each other as a couple impressed him even at that early age. We are very sorry for your loss of Mr Wagner and will keep you in our prayers.
