Kenneth Soltz Obituary

Kenneth Soltz, of Pawcatuck, passed away at Fairview Nursing Home in Groton on Sunday, June 9, 2013, surrounded by family and friends.
Ken was born on Jan. 25, 1949, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London. He grew up on 16 Dart St., the youngest of three children. Graduating from New London High School in 1967, Ken went on to study pharmacy at the University of Connecticut where he graduated in 1972. There, he was a member of the Kappa Psi fraternity.
Afterward, he accepted a position in the pharmacy at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, where he remained for 40 years.
In recent years, Ken became a recreational golfer and had many interests including gardening, playing blackjack, watching the New York Yankees and rooting for the UConn basketball teams. He was also a member of the Ahavath Chesed Synagogue. But, his first loves were always his family and the many friends he found along his journey.
Ken is survived by his wife of 38 years this October, Judy (Hall) Soltz, and their daughter, Jacqueline Soltz; his mother Sallie (Horowitz) Soltz; sister, Charlene Soltz Etkes and her husband; his uncles, Lester and Seymour; mother- and sister-in-law, Helen Danz Hall and Christine Hall; and his Norfolk terrier, Beatrix Soltz. He was predeceased by his father and brother, Jacob and Howard Soltz; his favorite father-in-law, Robert Gordon Hall; and his first dogs, Baxter and Bennet Soltz.
We are grateful to those who have supported us and who cared for Ken during this time. We would especially like to thank: Nancy "Freddie" Duhaime, Nagy Wasef and the rest of the pharmacy crew; as well as Pam and Dick Walsh and all of our family friends.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Howard Soltz Memorial Scholarship at New London and Fitch High Schools or UConn School of Pharmacy in his name. We will be arranging a separate scholarship fund in Ken's name at New London and Stonington High schools.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, June 12, at Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1 Mystic (51 Williams Ave.) between 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. The funeral will be held on Thursday, June 13, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery, Route 27, Mystic.

Dear Judy and Jackie, I was so sorry to hear about Ken. I hold many fond memories of times our lives have crossed. I will always remember Adult Learn to Skate and our daughters skating at Conn College. I will also remember Ken (and you) at all those rowing regattas. What memories. My heart is with you.

Judy, I am so sorry to hear of Kenny's death. I have seen either of you since graduation. Kenny was such a wonder, funny buddy.

June 14, 2013

Kenny was a good person, I saw him last October at the Thames Barber Shop. We talked about Hoxie, his father, the new Acura he was purchasing and him not retiring. I did not recognize him at first and had not seen him for years and did not realized his dad had passed. Life was short for the Soltz boys. Their father and uncles work long and hard for them. Deepest sympathy and condolences to their families.

Growing up on Plant St. put us together all through our school years, including UCONN, but as adults we reconnected at the beginning of my nursing career at L & M Hospital. Although it's been many years, I think of Kenny fondly and am deeply saddened. My sincere condolences go out to the Soltz family.

Dear Soltz Family, I don't have any words of wisdom. Our families were as one before I was born. Kenny was always kind and smiling and I know his loss leaves a hole for you all, so keep talking about him, tell the funny stories, and take care of each other.

Dear Judy and Family,

I am sorry to hear about Ken. As you may recall I had the pleasure to work with him at the hospital for many years. He was one of the few gentlemen that always had a smile on face and would talk to everyone. I enjoyed many meetings with him and used to eat lunch next to him and the pharmacy group. It was a pleasure to have known him. I am very sorry for your loss. Please know that there are so many others like myself, I'm sure that will remember him this way too......

It's been a long time since my youth in New london but some of my fondest memories are of the period we lived at Plant & Ocean and the times we had playing ball, organized & disorganized with all the kids in the Plant St./Dart St neighborhood of which the Soltz brothers, Kenny and Hoxie, were key. Kenny was a good friend and one of the people I often thought of over the years. My sympathies go out to his family.
