Margaret M. Hopwood

Margaret M. Hopwood, 97, of Andover, Mass., formerly of Westerly, R.I., died on Sunday, May 29, 2011, at her home.
She was born in Westerly on Sept. 5, 1913, the daughter of the late Edward and Elizabeth (Flynn) Whalen.
She graduated from Westerly High School and from the Rhode Island College of Education.
Mrs. Hopwood had a long career as a school teacher beginning in the Bradford Schools and ending in Bristol, R.I., at the age of 70.
She spent many happy retirement years in her beloved Westerly until she moved to Andover at the age of 90 to be with her son.
Mrs. Hopwood was the wife of the late John Hopwood and the sister of Dorothy Smith and Elizabeth Wright, who both predeceased her.
She is survived by her son, David Hopwood, of Andover; daughter-in-law, Nancy Hopwood, of Westerly; granddaughters, AJ Hudson and Deena Mandes, of Westerly, and Laura Vaun, of Andover; grandsons, John Hopwood, of North Andover, Gregory Hopwood, of Shrewsbury, Mass., and James Hopwood, of Miami Beach, Fla.; and nephews, Jim Smith, Jack Wright and Tom Wright, all of Westerly. She had 14 great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, June 3, 2011, at 10 a.m. at St. Pius X Church, 44 Elm St., Westerly. There will be no procession from the funeral home.
Burial will take place at River Bend Cemetery, Westerly. Calling hours will take place on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rushlow-Iacoi Funeral Home & Crematory, 64 Friendship St., Westerly.
