Robert Caruolo Obituary

Robert A Caruolo, 80, died October 24, 2014, after a decades long struggle with a brain tumor. Bob will be fondly remembered as a man of great courage, kindnesses, and humor. In 1967, he pioneered the turf industry in Rhode Island. While he meticulously researched and implemented the science, he established two successful farming businesses. He shared his knowledge with many who refer to him as "the grandfather of the turf industry" in his home state. Because of his deep love for his land, he was one of the first farmers to sell his development rights to the State of Rhode Island, thus preserving his land as farmland forever.
One of his greatest pleasures was sharing information: no fact or detail escaped his enthusiasm. Some kind soul might have said that he had "the gift of gab;" however, the rest of his friends and family would say, "My God, that man can TALK!" And he delighted in telling a good joke. The things he especially enjoyed included the ocean, sailing, the America's Cup; Bonaire, snorkeling; music – especially playing his grand piano and singing; Sinatra; being with his nephews, "the boys"; sharing his love of plants with Clark Farms staff and customers; making and eating pizza, going to Brickley's for ice cream; and people, and not necessarily in that order.
His gift of connecting with others was only exceeded by his love for family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Anna "Red" Caruolo, whom he deeply loved and cherished, his best friend and travel partner for over 38 years; his brother and sister-in-law, Ed and Alice Caruolo of North Carolina; his children, Lisa (and Bud) Lockwood of Exeter, Keith Caruolo of South Kingstown, Albert (and Nancy) Seifert of Westerly, Scott (and Leslie) Seifert of Mystic, and Carrie (and Van) Hovey of Conn.; his nephews, Douglas, Gary, Eddie, and Paul Caruolo; six grandchildren, one great grandchild; and his dear friends, Jim Poisson, Thompson Rowe-Drake, Riley Lamson, and Reginald Jones.
His family wishes to thank the fine South County physicians who cared for him over many years: Donald McNiece, Mark Coppes, Joseph Romanello and Umberto Capuano.. Also, the staff at Roberts Health Centre, especially Karen, Nancy, Scott, Peter, Joann, Kristen, and Josh.
A Celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, November 16, 2014, at Clarke Farms on Route 1 North in Matunuck, South Kingstown, at 11:30 a.m. Arrangements with Fagan-Quinn Funeral Home: www.FaganQuinnFuneralHome.com
If you wish, in memory of Bob, donations may be made to the Master Gardeners Foundation at URI.

So sorry for your loss. My prayers go out to you & your family.
I can remember when I mowed his big turf farm with my Dad tractor and got a sun burn on my legs.
It was nice working for Bob and my dad.

Rest in peace Mr. Caruolo,

Very nice man, he gave me my very first "paycheck" many, many years ago. I helped pick rocks out of a future turf field once and he paid me with a check, I thought I was cool! I worked with him many years later for a couple of days and he was still a very nice person.
