Serena Grace Bates

WESTERLY - It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Serena Grace Bates of Westerly, on Wednesday, January 17, 2024.

She was born in New Haven, CT to the late August and Grace Massaro. She is predeceased by her husband of 17 years, Darrell Lee Bates, and leaves behind three loving daughters, Debra Psimer, Serena G. Bates, Jr. and Darlene Ross. She also leaves behind her brother August A. Massaro; sister-in-law Stella Massaro; her sister Grace C. Andrews; sons-in-law, Paul Psimer, Mike Barca and Jason Lober; as well as her loving grandchildren, Michael Barca, Christina Psimer, and Donald Psimer; and several nieces and nephews.

Serena was a hardworking and resilient woman who singlehandedly raised her three children while working three jobs simultaneously upon becoming a young widow. A waitress for many years at Sailor Ed's in Mystic and Two Trees Restaurant at Foxwoods Casino, Serena later on in life became a CNA, caring for Alzheimer patients at The Elms. She was a straight shooter, not one to mince words and raised her daughters to be confident, strong, independent and loving women…just like she was. She will forever be in our hearts.

Visiting hours are omitted. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial, to be celebrated at 12 noon on Wednesday, January 24th at St. Pius X Church, 44 Elm St., Westerly. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in her memory. Serena was a three-time survivor.
