Lois Mae Scouten

1921 - 2025

Lois Scouten, 104, Eckelson, ND passed away in her home surrounded by her children while under the care of HIA Hospice and her family on October 10, 2025.  There will be visitation at the Lerud Mathias Funeral Home chapel on Thursday, October 16, 2025, from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM.  Her funeral service will be 1:00 PM, Saturday, November 1, 2025, at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Valley City.  She will be laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery, Sanborn, ND.  The funeral service will be live streamed, then archived, on a link provided along with her obituary on her tribute page at www.lerudmathias.com.  An online guestbook is available there as well.
She was born Lois Mae Cofell on May 2, 1921, to Floyd and Elizabeth (Lawrence) Cofell in Edgeley, ND. She graduated from Montpelier, High School in 1939. She was united in marriage with Frank Scouten on August 1, 1943.

The couple made their home in Eckelson, ND where they raised their 10 children and ran the family farm. She later worked many years at the State Hospital in Jamestown. Lois fed her family from her huge garden filled with vegetables and beautiful flowers. She loved children and her family and welcomed everyone into her home for many years. She and Frank were known for welcoming strangers into their home who soon became their lifelong friends.

Lois was an 80-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star where she held many offices including several years as secretary. She was also a loyal member of the United Church of Christ where she served many roles over the years. She was a gift to everyone who knew her and much loved by her family.

She is survived by her children: Donelda Remmick of Grand Forks, ND, Carol Malcolm of Talent, OR, Lucille (Robert) Luther of Dundas, MN, Charles (Debra) Scouten of Downers Grove, IL, Frank (Darla) Scouten of Zimmerman, MN, Floyd (Tammy) Scouten of Spiritwood, ND, Dorothy (Richard) Suggs of Grand Forks, ND, Ethel (Kent) Utter of Tempe, AZ, Robert (Jo) Scouten of Todd, NC, and Joyce (Kyle) Bohnker of Denison, IA; 25 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; two sons-in-law, Alvin Remmick and Terrence Malcolm; 5 brothers, William, Eugene, Gordon, Marvin and Arthur; and two sisters, Elizabeth and Edith.
