Claire Luella McCloskey was born October 6, 1913, in Fortuna to George W. Nelson and Doris Williams Nelson. She graduated from Eureka High School in 1930. She married, James J. McCloskey, Jr., in 1933, lived in Loleta until the mid 1960’s when they moved to Fortuna. Since 1981 she has been a resident of Eureka.
She worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for many years, and retired from Gates & Associates Insurance Agency in 1976.
Claire is survived by her daughter, Meredith M. Heinle of McKinleyville; her son, James J. McCloskey III of Fort Bragg; her grandchildren, David M. Heinle of Salem, OR, Susan E. Louk of Albany, OR, James K. Heinle of San Francisco, Carol E. Escobar of Eureka, Leslie J. Mendez of Sylmar, CA, and Patrick S. McCloskey of Fort Bragg; her great-grandchildren, Marcus W. Louk of Corvallis, OR, Katie S. Louk of Albany, OR, and Ruben A. Mendez of Sylmar, CA; her cousins, Maxine Malloy of Yreka, and Arta Williams of Hayward; her brother-in-law, Frank Simas of Eureka; and sister-in-law, Cecil McCloskey of Santa Cruz.
She is preceded in death by her husband, James J. McCloskey, Jr., and her sisters, Evelyn Nelson, Dorothy Bryant, and Virginia Simas.
A visitation will be held at Sander’s Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 14, 2004, from 2 pm to 6 pm. A Mass will be held at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church on Thursday, January 15, 2004, at 10 am.
Donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association or Hospice of Humboldt.
