James Brown Obituary

James T. Brown

February 3, 1943 – August 20, 2023

Jim died peacefully on August 20, 2023, in Vancouver, WA. He was a longtime resident of northern CA although he was born in San Pedro, CA to Edward and Barbara Brown. Jim spent his youth delivering papers, surfing and hiking with his friends around Southern CA. After graduating from Venice High School Jim headed to Humboldt State College majoring in forestry and began his career and love of the woods.
In 1968 Jim married his college sweetheart, Jan Isackson, and they moved to Fort Benning, GA. After combat duty in Vietnam with the 9th Infantry division, Jim entered the Civil Engineering Masters program at San Jose State College. After completing his degree, Jim worked construction in the San Jose area until he was offered a Forest Engineering Lecturer position at HSU. In 1975 Jim was hired on the logging crew for Arcata Redwood Co. which began a 31-year career ending with his retirement in 2006 as President of Green Diamond Resource Co.
Jim enjoyed camping, traveling in their 5th wheel trailer, cruising the oceans and rivers, hunting and skiing but the most important was his family.
Jim is survived by his wife, Jan, son Lance and his wife Heidi, daughter Libby Tyler and her husband Ben, sister Nancy Smith and her husband John, four grandchildren, Evan and Emma Brown, Shawn Beasley and Carson Tyler.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Baywood Golf and Country Club, Arcara, CA on Thursday, September 14, 2023 at 4:00pm.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that contributions may be sent to the Humboldt Area Foundation James T. Brown Scholarship Fund, McKinleyville High School Wood Shop Program or to your favorite charity.

Jim was the consummate gentleman and I was happy to know him and serve on The Eureka Chamber of Commerce for two years. Jan and I were quilters together for many great years. Jim made a ruler holder for me. He loved wood working. I will miss his sweet spirit.

I had the pleasure of sharing a dorm room with Jim during our days at Humboldt State College. We enjoyed hiking, playing flag football and sampling foamy beverages. I couldn´t have had a finer room mate. My condolences to his family.

Near the end of my 44 year career with Simpson Timber, I came to know and appreciate, Jim Brown's personal and professional skills and his fine character. Of the many managers I worked with during those 44 years, and there were many very good ones, Jim stood out as the very best.
