James Gast Obituary

JAMES AVERY GAST James Avery Gast died on December 11, 2017, at the age of 88. He was born April 28, 1929, in New Rochelle, New York to Ruth and Alois Gast but claimed Massachusetts as his home state. Jim started working at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in 1947, beginning his life-long work in oceanography. He attended Amherst College, completing his undergraduate degree in 1953 after serving in the Marine Corp during the Korean War. He then drove his 1928 Franklin across the United States to attend the University of Washington where he received his doctorate in oceanography in 1960. In the summer of 1954, Jim met Thea at the UW Marine Lab at Friday Harbor. They married in 1955 and honeymooned on a sailboat in the San Juan Islands. In 1959, Jim spent 5 months as the senior oceanographer on a drifting ice floe, gathering information on the Arctic Ocean. Then in January of 1961, he began his teaching career at HSU which lasted over 30 years. During his years at HSU, Jim was involved in the design and construction of the Trinidad Marine Lab and was its founding director. He was the first professor in the newly established oceanography program and was mainly responsible for the program to obtain and operate vessels with seagoing capabilities. He was the skipper of the vessels which took students from various disciplines out to sea for study and research. In the summer of 1970, Jim, as captain, and 14 HSU students brought the Catalyst from Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin to Eureka for use by HSU. Jim's community involvement included serving as a Sea Scout skipper, on the Arcata Parks and Recreation Commission, and on the Boards of the Humboldt Maritime Museum and the Friends of the Arcata Marsh. He was a member of the Redwood Gun Club. In 1973, Jim was elected Commissioner to the newly formed Humboldt Bay Harbor Commission and served until 1989. He designed and built a sailing vessel which was to be used for oceanography instruction and research. He leaves his wife, Thea; sons Karl of Tucson, Tom (Ulrike) of Bayside and Avery of Juneau; grandchildren Marlin Gast and Cassidy Gast. He also is survived by brothers Richard Gast (Betty Andrews) and Peter Gast (Jody Reeves) of Mattapoisett, MA, and sister Barbara Keohane of Waldwick, NJ along with many nieces and nephews. The family expresses its appreciation to the caregivers at Adult Day Health Care of Mad River and Frye's Care Home for their loving care of Jim. They are also grateful to John Hokman for his long-time friendship with Jim. Memorial contributions can be made to Adult Day Health Care of Mad River, PO Box 1115, Arcata, CA 95518 or Hospice of Humboldt, 33207 Timber Fall Court, Eureka, CA 95503. At Jim's request, there will be no service and his ashes will be scattered at sea. Please sign the guestbook at www.times-standard.com

Met Dr. James Gast in 1967 taking Oceanography 100 as a freshman at HSC. Without a doubt, he became one of my most influential professors. Became a friend of Captain Jim and his family; wife,Thea and his three sons: Karl, Tom and Avery on one of the most life changing experiences of my life voyaging from Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin through the the Panama Canal ending in Humboldt Bay. Been such a honor and privilege to have known you. West Winds to ya Captain.

I am so sorry to hear this. I met Dr. Gast back in the summer of 1981 with the National Science Foundation Summer Science Institute. He taught 60 high school kids, six days a week, then drove the bus on field trips all over Humboldt County, and even gave lectures in the evenings. When I came back up to HSU a year later, he was my mentor and sounding board...and friend.

Dear Thea, Karl, Tom & AveryI am sorry to hear of Jim's passing, but celebrate his life well lived.

As a kid growing up with Karl, it was always so fun to see Jim and hear his terrific stories. He had such a twinkle in his eye and I truly delighted in every encounterboth in my youth and adulthood as well.

The love he felt for you, Thea, and his sons was evident and I'm sure you feel his absence. I know I still miss my dad everyday.

Best wishes for happy memories to be yours always. I know my life is richer for having known Jim and I will keep his memory alive within my heart.

Fondly

Stacey

I can still remember the lecture he gave our 6th grade class back in 1967. Loved it.

"If you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life." That was written for him. By far my favorite teacher when I went to HSU.

Thank you for the wonderful biographical notes about Jim. Only now do I find out that he was active in the Sea Scouts - an organization dear to my heart. Wish I had been able to tell him of how it played such an important part in my family's life. It was a joy to learn of his rich life and I'm glad you two had many good years together even though it has been difficult these last years. My thoughts are with you.

So sorry to learn of Jim's passing. Always honored that when he would come to the house, he came to the back door because he said, "Guests come to the front door, friends come to the back door. You will be truly missed.

Was an honor to know Jim and learn of his life-long pursuits of knowledge, of understanding, and of Thea. Jim has bestowed wonderful legacies, including the seminal marine lab, the wisely outfitted department of Oceanography; and his engaging and engaged family. Blessings upon us all.

As a new faculty member in 1972 I was welcomed by Dr. Gast as a new colleague and soon came to enjoy his helpful comments about being a teacher at HSU. I looked forward to our early morning talks and he helped to make my transition from student to teacher interesting and enjoyable. His warm welcome helped me adjust and is a fond memory.
My sincerest thoughts are with you and the world has lost one of its most interesting residents, but his memory and work will live on forever. My prayers are with you.
