Josie was born in Ferndale on December 24, 1920, to Oscar and Theckla (Schneider) Meister. She attended Ferndale schools and graduated from Ferndale Union High School in 1938. Josie lived in Ferndale for many years prior to relocating to La Habra in 1961. She was a long time member of the Church of the Assumption and of the Native Daughters of the Golden West, Oneonta Parlor, both in Ferndale and also of the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Josie passed away peacefully on April 11, 2008, in Campbell, California.
She is survived by a sister, Delphine Meister Livingston; a daughter, Anne Louise Sousa Petersen; two sons, James Anthony Sousa and Michael Joseph Pellkofer; 7 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 2 step-children; 9 step-grandchildren; a special sister-in-law, Alice Sousa Haywood; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Thekla Meister; a brother, Oscar Meister, Jr.; and a sister, Anna Meister Godinho; her first husband, Antone Joseph Sousa; second husband, Joseph John Pellkofer; two sons, Lt. Clarence Anthony Sousa, USN, and Paul Anthony Sousa.
A recitation of the Rosary will be held on Wednesday April 16, 2008, at 7:00 PM at Hillside Chapel, Rose Hills Memorial Park and Mortuary, 3888 S. Workman Mill Road, Whittier, CA. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday April 17, 2008, at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 900 W. La Habra Blvd., La Habra, CA, followed by graveside services at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 2161 Fullerton Road, Rowland Heights, CA.
