Mabel Ayers Obituary

Mabel S. Ayers

Mabel S. Ayers, born May 15, 1920, in Brusly, LA, passed away on September 12, 2004, at Pacific Health Care rest home at age 84.

A native of Planquemine, LA, Mabel originally came to Eureka from Louisiana in 1943, returning to Louisiana at the close of 1944. She returned for good to Eureka in 1964.

Mabel was the fourth of eleven children born to the union of Edmond and Pearl Snowton. Mabel received her early education at Brusly Elementary School in Brusly, Louisiana.

Her first job revolved around her love for cooking, serving as a cook at Master Bakery in Eureka. She served her country during World War II serving as a “Rosie the Riveter” at a Humboldt Bay Ship Yard.

As a girl, Mabel came to recognize she was in need of a Savior and confessed Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She was baptized in Lukeville, LA, by the late Rev. Luke Billups at Antioch Baptist Church. Over the years, Mabel was recognized as an energetic soul-winner, eager to share faith. She was a member in good standing of Grace Baptist Church since 1964. She served her Lord faithfully in many different activities and ministries throughout her service at Grace Baptist Church.

Her service to the Lord especially revolved around ministries to children and their families. Mabel loved arranging flowers for display in the church on Sunday mornings. She loved music and was a member of the choir at Grace Baptist Church.

On Sunday, September 12, 2004, by the providential hand of Almighty God, a final summons was served on one of His children. A good woman, one Mabel Snowton Ayers, was visited by an angel of the Lord saying, “Servant of God, well done! The battle has been fought, the victory has been won. Enter into your Master’s joy.”

As Mabel was transcended from the circumscription of time to the boundless realm of eternity, many can say in unison that God had given us a “good woman.”

Mabel is survived by sisters, Dorothy Taylor of Eureka, Helen LeBan of Planquemine, LA; brothers, Alex Snowton of Eureka, Thomas Snowton, Sr. of Eureka, Warren Snowton of Eureka; and many nephews and nieces.

Mabel was preceded in death by Lawrence Ayers, whom she married 1946. Mabel became a widow in 1954.

Friends and family are invited to attend Mabel’s funeral service at Grace Baptist Church, 220 Buhne Street, Eureka, at 3 pm on Monday, September 20, 2004, which will be conducted by officiant Pastor Richard McGinty. A reception will be held at the church immediately following the service.

Family and friends are invited to pray their respects at Chapel of the Ferns on Friday evening, September 17, 2004, from 4 pm to 7 pm and again on Monday, September 20, 2004, from 10 am until noon. There will be a private internment at Oceanview Cemetery on Tuesday, September 21, 2004.

In lieu of flower donations in the memory of Mabel, the family encourages donations to Grace Baptist Church that her heart for evangelism might be continued to be remembered long after her passing.

I returned from my vacation, and I heard that a long-time friend, and (tenant) had passed away. I'm feel so sad that she didn't get to come back to her apartment, but yet, you have gone to a much better place to reside, in the House of the Lord. We will miss you dearly. Sincerely,

My prayers go out to you in your hour of berievement. To hear of the passing of Mrs. Ayers was a shock and a sadening. She was truly a nice and kind person. My thoughts go back a long ways to my rememberance of her when I was a child. She was a dear frined of the family. My prayer is that the Lord will strenghten and keep you in this hour of loss. Proverbs 3:3 reminds us to put our trust in the Lord. Hoping to see you soon. May God Bless you and keep you.

It was such a blessing to have shared the special time that we shared upon our trip to Eureka, it was a trip of a life time. Words can never express how it made us feel to share with you and especially share the quality time with Aunt Mabel and Aunt Dorothy. We are very sorry that we could not make it for the services. Our thoughts and prayers were there with all of you. Always know that you are always in our prayers.
