Robert Giroux Obituary

ROBERT MICHAEL GIROUX November 28, 1953 -September 2, 2018 Resident of Blue Lake, CA Robert "Bob" Giroux was born in Santa Monica, CA November 28, 1953 and passed away unexpectedly from a stroke in Eureka, CA on September 2, 2018. Bob graduated from Saint Monica's High School and followed his brother, Paul, to Blue Lake, CA in the early 1970's. Bob worked in the shake and shingle business for many years before joining the Blue Lake Public Works Dept. where he performed many duties, including operating the Waste Water Treatment Plant, until his retirement. Bob had an innate sense of history and owned a 1948 Packard in its original condition while a teenager. He was an avid collector of antiques of many different types and often drove his 1929 Model A Sedan in Blue Lake's Annie & Mary Day parade. He had a penchant for tokens, especially old ones from bars and saloons around Humboldt County. He was a long-time volunteer for the Blue Lake Museum and found all aspects of the city's history to be very interesting. For nearly 37 years, Bob was an active member of the Blue Lake Volunteer Fire Department and served as its assistant Fire Chief for many years. Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Vincent and Josephine Giroux, brother, David Giroux, and sister, Yvonne Fairchild. He is survived by his brothers, Vincent Jr. (Chang Suk), Paul and Steven Giroux, sisters Martha Wedl (Mike) and Patty Giroux, nephews Trevor Giroux and Nicholas Wedl, and a niece Susan Giroux. Donations to the Blue Lake Museum or the Blue Lake Volunteer Fire Department are suggested in lieu of flowers. "The Last Bell" ceremony celebrating Bob's life will be held at the Blue Lake Fire Station at 3:00 pm Saturday September 15, 2018. Please sign the guestbook at www.times-standard.com

I met Bob when we both worked for the City of Blue Lake. What a kind and decent man even in difficult situations. I remember those times fondly.

Bob was my 1st friend when I came to Blue Lake, in 1973
We lived next door to each other in separate apartments. He generously showed me around the county , helped me meet new friends and was a gentle giant for 45 years. Just a week or 2 ago, we met at the Posr Office, and he invited me to come see his new place. But he died before we did that. I did go on a walkabout on his property and I like to think he was with me in spirit. He really took care of that place. He was an avid collector and historian. I can't believe he is gone now. He will be missed.
