Robert Hefner Obituary

Robert Glenn (Bob) Hefner

Robert G. Hefner passed away at age 73 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Eureka, California, on Saturday December 10, 2005, after a long struggle with throat cancer. He was a beloved father, grandfather, uncle and friend to many.

Robert was born in Pasadena, California, on October 8, 1932, and shortly thereafter his family moved to San Jose, CA. Robert voluntarily enrolled during high school to serve his country in the United States Marine Corps and was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Essex during the Korean War. He was awarded an honorable discharge from the U.S. Marine Corps in July of 1958.

In 1958 he was wed to Nancy Sue Hefner, who preceded him in death in 1993 after 34 years of marriage. In 1964 Bob and Sue Hefner moved to Humboldt County, where Bob worked for Pacific Bell as a communications splicer. He retired from the company after more than 32 years of dedicated service. He was a resident of Eureka for more than 30 years.

Robert was an avid fisherman, hunter, football fan, baseball fan and artist. In his spare time he constructed dozens of highly detailed model wooden ships that were featured in art exhibits across the state. Many of them can now be found in museums and private collections across the country.

Robert is survived by his son, William Van Hefner of Eureka; his granddaughter, Cristina R. Sharif of Anaheim, CA; his brother, William (Bill) Hefner of Paradise, CA; and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Robert arranged for a private cremation and burial at sea under the supervision of Sanders Funeral Home. There will be no public services, per his request.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2942 F Street, Eureka, CA 95501.

Bob had a "great soul." You could see it in his sparkling eyes and sweet smile. He was a very kind and welcoming person and I always enjoyed visiting him. He taught me how to clean fresh whole crab, which was quite the experience!

I will miss him very much. Everyone who knew Bob really enjoyed his company and true friendship. I know that he is most likely fishing with his wife in Heaven now, far away from his health struggles that he battled so courageously.

I send my love to you Bob and to his giving and courageous son who inherited many of his wonderful qualities.
