August 13, 1940 to April 24, 2008
Roger Rodoni was many things to many people: teacher, philosopher, confidant, loving husband, true friend, father, grandfather, and a man who loved his dogs. Roger was born in Scotia to Jim and Eva Rodoni and, other than his years at Cal Poly, SLO, spent his entire life in Humboldt County. Proud of his long generational ties, he was a Humboldt County historian, and a third generation Native Son with an extensive collection of local historical documents and photographs. Roger loved Humboldt County.
Artist, blacksmith, cow man, scholar, rodeo cowboy, expert horseman, pilot, master of the deep pit BBQ and camp fire Dutch oven cooking and a skilled story teller. A teacher and student of life, he lectured, preached, philosophized and found the talent in every man. He was a great observer of people and their actions - a watcher and a listener. He had a presence when he spoke - one felt compelled to listen because there was always a message in there somewhere. You always knew where he was coming from - he said what he meant and he meant what he said.
Roger believed in God without fearing Him, and was accomplished at quoting the bible. His hobbies included camping, Western Americana and a keen interest in history. Roger was deeply connected to the land. He admired fine horses. He loved hunting as much for the company of his dogs and fellow hunters as for the hunt. Roger and his wife Johanna enjoyed participating in local events with their team of Belgian horses and vintage horse drawn wagon.
Roger was a friend to the environment and to environmentalists, in ways that few could see. He was a man who judged a person not by their politics but rather by their character. If you approached Roger with respect and good humor, he was your friend in a heartbeat.
Roger served three terms as a Humboldt County Supervisor, and was campaigning for a 4th. He was a powerful voice on the Board of Supervisors for individual rights and for the principles our country was founded upon. He was a member of Fortuna Sunrise Rotary, Humboldt-Del Norte Cattlemen’s Association, California Cattlemen’s Association, The Buckeye Conservancy, Farm Bureau, Grange, Fortuna Chamber of Commerce and Native Sons of the Golden West.
He is survived by his loving wife, Johanna; children, Ronan O’Day, Russell Rodoni, Ronald Rodoni and Monica Willburn; and grandchildren, Chauncey Willburn, Hanna Willburn, Kayla Rodoni, Kelly O’Day and Cade Angelini; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws as well as many friends from all walks of life. He will be especially missed by Busy Dog, Molly, Lou, Leftovers and Zeus.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday April 30, 2008, at the Belotti Hall, Ferndale Fairgrounds, Ferndale, California, at 2:00 P.M. Arrangements are under the care of Goble’s Fortuna Mortuary.
Memorial contributions can be made in Roger’s memory to the: Fortuna Sunrise Rotary, Roger Rodoni Scholarship Fund, PO Box 273, Fortuna, CA 95540.

Johanna,
Roger was such a fun person with a sharp wit and the ability to mull over his thoughts before he spoke. I truly believe Roger to be one of the few "genuine gentlemen," I have ever met. May your memories of him comfort you in the days to come. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Johanna, it was truly a shock to find out about this. You and Roger were two of a few people that in all honesty, kept me "grounded and sane" with all that goes on in that community. He is an irreplaceable loss for all of us.

Johanna and family-
I am very saddened by your loss. I met Roger and you several times at functions in Ferndale and Fortuna that I attended with my pop, Ruben.
You and Roger seemed like such kindred spirits.. the salt of the earth as someone else has said. I know heartbreak and I also know that good memories and time will help heal a broken heart. I wish this for you and your family. You will see each other again, of this I am certain.
With loving thoughts to you,

I am so sorry for the loss you have to endure. I took almost all of Rogers classes at CR, from horses to cattle he taught me more about life with just those hours I spent in his classes. I loved and admired him for everything he stood for and his quiet way about world change. He is correct that we cannot sit on our laurels and let "them" take care of us, we are "them". Johanna my heart goes out to you and the family. We have lost a great man. He took me and a friend to his ranch on Rainbow Ridge and that was the most memorable day and fun day I have enjoyed in a very long time. We mostly talked horses and politics, of course. He knew a good horse and had excellent morals. I will see him in the hereafter and he better have a good horse for me.

Johanna & Family:
My heart and prayers are with you during this hardest of times. My favorite moments with Rodger was a couple hours of philosophical deep creative conversation with him & Hobart at the Scotia Inn one time. He was willing to look at life as the big picture! What a man of our times, we so need more of them. Take care and if I can be of any help in any way, I'm here for you.

We were saddened to hear of such a tragedy. Roger was always well respected by us and he will be missed by many!!! We have always appreciated the support given by Roger and Johanna to my father, Jay Parrish, during his time with the city of Rio Dell and during his time with the city of Ferndale as well as the genuine support and concern for the County of Humboldt.

Dear Johanna & Family.
I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear of our loss of Roger. A truly tragic accident. I've known Roger longer than most of my family members. We used to raise a little "hell" at Worthington Elementary School, if you can believe that! It wasn't that long ago! Then I ran into Roger when I was with Pacific Lumber Company, before the Maxxam takeover. The officer's of the "old" Palco group thought the world of Roger. I remember a hunting trip wherein one of the Palco guys tried to introduce me to Roger, when I told them that I already knew Roger for over twenty years. Our fifty year high school reunion is this fall, and I was really hoping to see you and Roger there. I will make a point of visiting with you, Johanna, in mid October 2008. Our pain is always different, but I lost my wife to a freak auto accident seven years ago. You never get over it.
I wish you and the kids the very best and I will call on you late this year.

Ronan: What a great, shocking and sudden loss. Your dad was always where the action was. You were in my class at FHS and you are a winner in the tradition of your dad. When we moved from Fortuna I left a video of people around Fortuna at the Rohner Park Museum and it includes you riding in the barrel race at the Fortuna Rodeo in the late 1980's. If you travel through Redding, I am in the phone book. Yours, Jerry & Beverly Hurley [email protected]

To Johanna and Family
I am very sad for your loss.
Roger was a unique individual. He was his own man, and lived life on his own terms. His personal values, many which have been lost in our society, placed great responsibility on the individual; he did a wonderful job living up to those values.
I remember the many conversations we had after class time, and particularly enjoyed Roger revealing bits and pieces of his philosophy of life, and his role in the world around him. He reveled in his on-going efforts to understand his environment and its evolution.
He will be sadly missed, but there is a great measure of satisfaction in knowing who he was and what he accomplished, and what he stood for. I believe it was a life well spent.
Respectfully,
John Regli
