Theodore Anvick Obituary

THEODORE E. ANVICK Theodore "Ted" Emerson Anvick left this world on March 16, 2016. Ted's joyful and illustrious life began June 12, 1929 with his birth in Eureka, California. He was born to Emma Torgersen Anvick and Clarence Theodore Anvick of Arcata, California, and to grandparents born in Norway. Ted was especially proud of his Norwegian heritage. He grew up on the family's poultry farm on Anvick Road in Arcata. The outdoors was always his favorite place and he grew up loving animals and gardening. He also enjoyed baseball, hunting, and designing and building projects which soon developed into a deep love of structural engineering. After studying at Humboldt State University, he attended Oregon State University and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and a Master's degree in Structural Engineering. Soon afterward, he became a licensed structural and geotechnical engineer in several states. Ted Anvick went on to use his professional training and exceptional creative genius to distinguish himself as a structural engineer and designer renowned on a global scale. Among his prolific accomplishments, Ted taught engineering and design at USC as a senior lecturer; performed seismic and structural design and engineering for the California Institute of the Arts; the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena; the Redondo Beach and Santa Monica Municipal Piers; hotels in Singapore and Saudi Arabia; and, seismic retrofit projects for Humboldt State University and Arcata's Jacoby Storehouse, to name just a few of his lifetime achievements. His passion for structural engineering was rivaled only by his love for God, family, and life itself. Ted was a happy man who enjoyed hosting large and frequent family gatherings at his home with his devoted beloved wife of more than 36 years, Lenore Anvick, who survives him along with his loving children Victor Anvick (Patricia); Keith Anvick (Diane); Deborah Anvick Kearns (Calvin); Scott Anvick (Janet), and Lynne Anvick; with his loving stepchildren: Donald Wattenbarger (Lina Carro) and Janet Ware (Robert); his loving grandchildren: Sarah; Joshua; Isaac; Abigail; Caleb; Keith; Kate, and 11 great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were Ted's parents and sister, Grace Ellen Anvick Greenwood. He leaves behind many beloved family members: his dear cousins, Marjorie Adams and Carl, Larry, and Mitch Torgersen; his beloved brother-in-law, Bill Greenwood; and his dearest friends: Pastor Chuck Clark; Bob Baker; Bill Horton; Earl Knight; Phil Perez, and Mohammed Saddick. All who knew and loved Ted Anvick are invited to a celebration of his life on March 23, 2016 at 1:00 pm at Sanders Funeral Home, 1835 E St., Eureka. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Wesleyan Church of the Redwoods, 1645 Fischer Ave, McKinleyville 95519. Please sign the guestbook at www.times-standard.com under obituaries.

Can't believe that it has been three years since we lost Ted and six years since we lost Grace Ellen. I know they are having a wonderful time visiting with one another, their parents and all the Anvick and Torgersen relatives.

What sweet and happy memories we have of our dear "Trainman" and beautiful Lenore. Numerous trips together were filled with lots of laughter and adventures. Our friendship was made deeper with our shared love of The Lord. In our memories we will always see his warm smile, his enthusiasm for engineering ideas and projects, his wonderful hair(!), his affection for Lenore and his family, and his parting words that always included "We wish you the best!"

Our thoughts, prayers and love are with Lenore and all of the family. May the peace of the Lord surround you as you rest in the assurance that Ted is with his Lord and Savior.

Although we didn't know Ted for a long time, we felt very blessed to be allowed to rent the old farmhouse and be a small part of he and Lenore's life.
When I would go to visit, they always made me feel welcomed and I will carry with me the memory of Ted saying "We love you" and also "We wish you all the best".
We will soon leave Arcata, but we will take with us some very special memories and Ted is a big part of those memories.
We pray comfort and blessings on Lenore and the rest of Ted's family. How wonderful to have had him as part of your lives. A special man. And what a comfort to know he is with God now, and possibly designing a new addition to the heavenly city. Love and hugs to all.
