Thomas Klapproth Obituary

THOMAS BRADLEY KLAPPROTH Tom was born on June 27, 1933 in Racine, Wisconsin. He passed away at home in Eureka on November 11, 2017 at the age of 84. He grew up in Racine, leaving to attend college at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, majoring in fine arts. After a short hitch in the Army, he became a graduate student in art at the University of California at Berkeley, where he met and married his wife Judy in 1959. While in Berkeley, Tom was a policeman in the Berkeley Police Department, manager of the textbook department of the Associated Student UC store, held a similar position in a privately owned bookstore, and eventually manager of the student store at De Anza College. The Klapproths moved to Humboldt County in 1976, when Tom became a member of the Redwood Art Association and established his art studio, now in 208 C Street studio in Eureka, Ca. The family wishes to give fervent thanks to Agape Home Care and Hospice of Humboldt, they were professional, experienced and immensely comforting. He is survived by his wife Judy, sister Nona and brother-in-law Donald McSherry in Verona, Wisconsin. At the request of family, there will be no funeral. Those who wish to donate in his memory can do so to Hospice of Humboldt or the Redwood Art Association. Arrangements under the care of Goble's Fortuna Mortuary, Fortuna, Ca. I am saddened. I was looking at his pastel of 3 Swimmers 3x5 I bought in 1986. Think Ill google him. I love my piece he made! I am honored! Gareth Tyrnauer

I met Tom at the Art Center in Old Town Eureka back in the early 1990s. I had some great talks with him about art and recall him listening to Chopin and Shostakovitch as he painted his immense canvases. Then later, I met his wife Judy and occasionally bumped into them at Vellutini's in Henderson Center. At other times I'd catch them feeding seagulls by the bay as I tended to some feral cats. Lovely couple I always thought. I always enjoyed our chance meetings and will never forget them.

Judy,

I was so glad to be able to read about Tom's life and get a greater insight into who he was.

We,from Agape Home Care, so enjoyed being able to come alongside of you and help you with Tom's care in your great time of need. He was a great guy to work with. We enjoyed getting acquainted with you both.

It was so sweet to see how evident it was of your love for one another. Loved seeing that.

Tom had a winning smile and he could say a lot with expression in his eyes and a nod of the head. He was very appreciative for all that we were there to help him with.

Delighted to have the opportunity to know him.

Thank you for always making us feel so at home when we came for our shifts. I can see why he liked you so much! You were a good team together.

Please accept my sincere condolences. May you find comfort in the many adventures and memories of your time together; memory is a wonderful gift from God.
