Warren Iving Hill, a native of Eureka, died peacefully at his home in Cutten on Tuesday, September 14, 2004 at the age of 83.
Warren was born to Warren W. and Inez Hill on March 4, 1921, and lived on Union Street with his mother and stepfather, George A. Ford, for most of his childhood. He was active in scouting, especially Sea Scouts and became an Eagle Scout while attending Eureka High School.
As a young man, Warren worked on several sheep ranches in the Redwood Creek and Zenia areas. Early in World War II, Warren worked with a survey crew that was mapping coastal areas for better defense of the coast. In 1943, Warren followed the footsteps of his father and stepfather into employment with Pacific Gas and Electric Company, working first as a lineman and later as a materials supervisor, mostly in the San Jose area, until his retirement 40 years later.
Warren married Lillian Gorney in 1946. They had two children, Ellen, a San Jose Teacher and Douglas, deceased. They had been married for 44 years when she died in 1991. After his wife’s death, Warren returned to Eureka, where he found new happiness when he met and married Juanita Horel in 1996. Warren and Juanita shared eight years of love and laughter together at their home on Walnut Drive. Warren also loved, and was loved by, his new family, Juanita’s daughter and son-in law, Penelope and William Chastain of Eureka, and Juanita’s three sons and their wives: Charles and Susan Horel of Sacramento, John and Shelly Horel of Utah, and Thomas and Pamala Horel of Wisconsin, fourteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Warren is also survived by several cousins, in Eureka, Washington, and the Central Valley.
After his return to Eureka, Warren joined the Eureka Host Lion’s Club, participating as his health permitted. He was also a member of the Pioneer Society and the PG&E Livewires. Despite a long illness, Warren kept his kind, gentle personality and sense of humor to the end.
At Warren’s request, no service will be held. Burial will be in Madronia Cemetery in Saratoga, California.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Eureka Host Lion’s Club, P.O. Box 274, Eureka, CA 95502
