Doris Parrott Obituary

MONTPELIER - Doris E. Parrott passed away peacefully on Aug. 26, 2014, at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, Vermont. She was 93 years old. Doris was born at home in the house her father built in Fairlee, Vermont, on May 21, 1921, to the late Homer and Alice (Pierce) Perkins. She graduated from Lyndon State Teachers College in 1942 and returned to Fairlee, where she taught school in a one-room schoolhouse during World War II.

Doris married Milton L. Parrott on July 2, 1946, and raised their three children in Wilder, Vermont. She taught second grade at the Wilder Elementary School. She loved teaching her little people, as she fondly referred to them.

Growing up during the Depression and World War II, Doris had a knack for being resourceful. Whether it was canning vegetables from her garden, gathering the last cranberries from the bog behind their home to bake and cook with, or collecting shells and pine cones to make pretty items to share with family and friends, Doris always found a way to do a lot with a little.

After retirement Doris and Milton moved to Centerville, Massachusetts (Cape Cod), where they lived for over 30 years. During those years they continued to travel together and enjoy life.

Doris was loved by all who knew her. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing and quilting. She showered her family with her handmade hats, mittens, afghans and quilts. She also volunteered and donated her time making crafts to benefit the Women's Guild at Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville, Massachusetts.

Doris was a devoted wife of Milton (who predeceased her in 2009), with whom she shared 63 years of marriage. Doris is survived by three children, Thomas Parrott and his companion, Nancy Gallo, of Nahant, Massachusetts, Gerald Parrott and his wife, Kathy, of Barre, and Karen Parrott, of Acton, Massachusetts; four grandchildren, Brooke Parrott Nadzam and husband, Kevin, of East Montpelier, David Parrott and fiance, Kimberly Houle, of Barre, Jayson and Alyssa Parrott, of Hinesburg, and Nina Parrott, of Acton, Massachusetts; and five great-grandchildren, Rachel Gordon, Matthew Parrott, Isaac Nadzam, Jacob Parrott and Amelia Parrott.

Her life will be honored and celebrated at the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St., Barre, in a private family gathering.

Interment will be at the Massachusetts National Cemetery on Cape Cod.

Memorial contributions in Doris' memory may be made to Boys Town, 200 Flanagan Blvd., P.O. Box 8000, Boys Town, NE 68010.
