J.C. Caroline Obituary
The Walker Funeral Home in Champaign says he died Friday at Carle Hospital.
Caroline, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, led the nation in rushing for Illinois in 1953 with 1,256 yards in nine games.

He signed with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League in 1955 before joining the Bears a year later, where he mainly played defensive back. He made the Pro Bowl as a rookie and finished with 24 career interceptions.
Caroline worked as an assistant coach at Illinois before becoming a physical education teacher and coach in Urbana.
University of Illinois spokesman Kent Brown called Caroline "one of the all-time great football players in Illinois history."

Mr. Caroline played high school football in my hometown, Columbia, SC. He returned a kickoff 101 yards with a broken ankle. He lettered in 3 sports. During the summer he returned to Columbia visiting friends. He was always gracious and friendly.

So sorry to here one of the (greatest) football players of all time in Illinois history passed away! I met him at former Grandy's reaturant and I loved the conversation in the twenty minutes we talked! May God bless his soul!!!

My prayers and sincere condolences to the family of J. C. Caroline. Death is never easy regardless of ones age but Psalms 90:10 shows how he lived a long life of special mightiness from God. I remember his role in "Brian's Song," played by the late Bernie Casey. I believe he made the NFL Pro Bowl in 1957. My condolences go out to J.C's family.

Wow, what a player. He should have been played on offense in the pro's. J C would have been a superstar there but he also was a darn good defensive back. With his talent he could have made it big in any generation. Prayers go out to all of his family and for his memory.
