Janet Couture Obituary

BARRE - Janet Gordon Couture passed away on Monday, February 22, 2016, in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her loving family.
Janet was born in Barre City to Florence (Smith) and John A. Gordon on September 17, 1935. An only child, she spent her entire life in her family home on Orange Street. She attended Barre City Schools, graduating from Spaulding High School, Class of 1954.
Janet was a homemaker, and enjoyed raising her children and babysitting her grandchildren and many other neighborhood children throughout the years. She enjoyed cooking and was a fantastic baker. She loved the flower and vegetable gardens in her yard and looked forward to the tomatoes each summer; the first ripe tomato was always saved for her. While her children were growing up, Janet always welcomed the neighborhood children (20 to 30) to play in the yard throughout the years. She also enjoyed listening to music of all kinds and taking walks with neighborhood friends. She was very proud that her father, John A. Gordon, and grandfather, John W. Gordon, both served as mayor for the city of Barre.
She met her husband, Armand Couture, in high school. They married in St. Monica Catholic Church on May 21, 1957.
Janet is survived by her husband, Armand Couture; her children, Catherine Couture Murphy, Ronald Couture and his wife, Kathy, Thomas Couture and Elizabeth Couture. She had five grandchildren who were the love of her life, April Murphy and her partner, Charles Moyer, Timothy Murphy, Courtland Couture, Jacob Couture and his wife, Kirstin, Kelsey Couture Trepanier and her husband, Jake.
Janet cherished her great-grandchildren, Brayden Murphy, Graysen Murphy and Baby Couture due in July. She also leaves behind her "adopted" children, Laura Galli and Edward Herford.
Janet is also survived by her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Annette Hernandez, Carmen and George Gale, Rita Hess, Robert (Bonhomme) and Mary Ann Couture, Roger Couture, John and Susan Couture, and Brenda Couture, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Janet was predeceased by her parents; her in-laws, Adrienne (Jacques) and Romelus Couture; son-in-law Mark Murphy; sisters-in-law Jane (Sagee) Couture and Vickie Couture; brothers-in-law William Hernandez Jr., Joseph Shaw and Philip Hess; also by niece Susan Shaw and nephew David Gale. Janet recently lost her beloved cat, Callie.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 5, 2016, at 11 a.m. in St. Monica Catholic Church, in Barre. There are no calling hours. Interment will be held in St. Sylvester Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Janet's memory may be made to St. Monica Catholic Church, 79 Summer St., Barre, VT 05641; or Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Rd., Barre, VT 05641.
Arrangements are in the care of the Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home, 58 Summer St., Barre.

As one of the "30 neighborhood children" my prayers go out to Mr. Couture, Cathy, Ronny, Tommy and Elizabeth. Their home and property made growing-up full of pleasant memories.

To the Couture family. During this difficult time family, friends and even strangers want to express how much they care for your family by a note or a warm hug. Proverbs 17:17 says "A true companion is loving all the time, and is a brother that is born for when there is distress."
