Leroy Butler Obituary

NORTHFIELD - Leroy C. Butler, beloved husband and devoted father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on Jan. 14, 2015, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his family. Roy simply enjoyed life and all it offered. Throughout his life he thrived in the roles of son, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, teacher, student, volunteer, painter, farmer, gardener, woodsman and traveler among many others.

Born April 27, 1938, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to Leroy and Eline Butler and grew up in Fairfield, Connecticut. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Wake Forest University in North Carolina and doctorate in chemistry from the University of Vermont. Roy was married to Elizabeth Ricks on June 15, 1963.

Roy was a true lifelong learner and educator. He went on to a creative career as a chemistry professor. This included embracing the opportunity of sabbaticals to travel and teach at other institutions. One such sabbatical took them to unique experience in Scotland for a year. He also collaborated on a unique multiyear program to conduct water studies on Sanibel Island, Florida. Additionally, he introduced a teaching methodology called guided inquiry to his classes at Norwich that freed him from the lectern to become a partner to the students as they learned.

After retiring from college education Roy poured his passion for knowledge and education into a volunteer role at his grandchildren's elementary schools. His enthusiasm for the world included an ongoing interest in art; most recently with watercolors. It wasn't enough for him to just learn and create, it was important for him to share this activity with young, budding artists at the elementary schools.

Through his many interests and activities including farming, photography, skiing, tennis, golf, woodworking, piano and Scouting Roy was always teaching, learning, exploring, creating and growing. For him, each experience was always best when shared. From his childhood and throughout his life, Roy loved the game of baseball and will always be a Yankees fan.

Survived by his wife of 51 years, Elizabeth; son Timothy Butler, of Fairlee, Vermont, and his wife, Lynne; daughter Justine Myers, of Waterbury Center, Vermont, and her husband Jim; son Christopher Butler, of North Reading, Massachusetts, and his wife, Maryellen; grandchildren Jack, Ryleigh, Annalise, Garrett and Thessalie.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at Northfield United Church. A reception will follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to support Christian education may be made to United Church of Northfield, 58 S. Main St., Northfield, VT 05663.

Liz and Family, Roy and I connnected recently over our shared family history. We worked out some mysteries together that would otherwise had been lost. What an intelligent, kind person he was. I'm truly proud to have associated with him. All the best to you and your family as you cope with your loss.

Dear Liz and Family, during last days I was so worried. I felt that something has happened. And now I am very sad. Jenny and I will never forget the wonderful day together with you both and Dawn and Paul in Bridgeport and Fairfield, which brought together our family again. I hoped so much to see you both again. Roy will forever have a place in our hearts. God may bless you and help you in this difficult time.
Lots of love

Very Sad learn of the passing of Professor Butler. He was a very demanding but fair professor, and a true friend during my time at Norwich. I will always remember playing ice hockey with him before we both ran off to make it to his organic chemistry lab each week. He was a great man and had a profound impact on me during our brief time together. May the Lord provide his family with peace and comfort. He will be sorely missed.

We have suffered to great losses in the last month from the Chemistry Department. Professor Butler and his take home Organic Chemistry test that we all went to the library looking for books to help us with only to find them all ‘missing' on professor Butler's desk. When I asked for some help I was told that I could always ask for someone else's guidance. Enter Michael Hamlin aka Hamster. Both of these men I counted among friends and am deeply saddened at their losses. The world and the Norwich community have lost to great friends.

My heartfelt condolences to the Butler family for your loss. Professor Butler was quick with a smile, upbeat and encouraging during academic struggles, and always available for help and consultation, often with great patience! His concern for our learning and understanding was always evident and greatly appreciated. God Bless and Godspeed.

It is with a sad heart that I write these condolences to you and your family, Mrs. Butler. Professor Butler was one of the kindest professors I had the pleasure and honor of knowing. I'll always remember how proud he was to have created a handy organic chemistry study guide before the internet was born. (And I was grateful he did!). I'll also remember how nice he was to take some stranded students like myself on a trip to Hanover, NH to get some Indian food, a cultural experience many of us had for the first time. He will be sadly missed!

When I worked in Northfield for Dr. Zuaro, Roy was a patient. Loved talking to him, he was so interesting. Always a smile on his face but especially when talking about his family.
Deepest sympathies, the loss will be great for everyone.

I was a student of his in the mid 90's, and wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to the entire family on this loss. My fondest memory of him was when I (somewhat sheepishly) approached him for help in getting the English department to waive all of their prior class requirements so that I could gain access to a senior level English course. He applied a little assistance (and then recommended a second course that sounded like it would also be good, advice I am happy to have taken) and told me that a good scientist is a good communicator, and that he would always be willing to help broaden the typical science education with the liberal arts. I believe we then had a cup of tea in his office.

I hope that the knowledge of how profoundly he affected my life in but a few short years will give you comfort in these trying times.
