Albert Burckard

Colonel Obel Wells was my immediate supervisor in Vietnam. We served together October 1970 to April 1971 as MACV advisors in the mountainous jungle region of northern I Corps between the DMZ, the Ashau Valley and Hue City. He was the Senior Advisor to the ARVN 3rd Infantry Regiment, 1st ARVN Division. I noticed that his Silver Star award from Korea, listed on the Valor Awards website has no citation. He told me about this combat action in detail during one of our professional talks in Vietnam. He recalled it as one of the last bayonet actions of the Korean War. Do you know any details of this engagement or maybe even have a copy of the original citation that you could share with me? I greatly admired and respected Colonel Wells during our combat time together and would appreciate knowing more about him. - Respectfully: Albert P. Burckard Jr., LTC, US Army retired, 12303 Titus Point Lane, Carrollton, Va. 23314. 757-613-6183. [email protected]. Thank you.

I served with then Major Wells in Berlin and Ft.Riley in '63 & '64. I considered he and Suzie among my best friends in those days. I've told a thousand people since then that he is the guy I wanted to be when I grew up. To the girl in the green shoes!

My thoughts go out to you and the family. Obie was a wonderful man and will be missed dearly. I enjoyed getting to know him as part of the Barre Rotary Club. It was always nice having him stop into our meetings when he was back here in Vermont.
