Roderick Goyette Obituary

BARRE TOWN - Roderick Matthew Goyette, D.M.D., 83, of Beckley Hill Road, died Friday morning, December 28, 2012, at the Central Vermont Hospital in Berlin. His family was at his bedside.

Born in Barre City, January 26, 1929, he was the son of Charles H. Goyette, M.D., and Mildred (Wark) Goyette. He attended Mathewson Graded School and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1946 where he was an All-State lineman on the Class A high school football team.

In 1950, he graduated from the University of Vermont and was a starting lineman on the university football team.

A veteran of U.S. Army service during the Korean War, he had been stationed in Germany.

Following his graduation from Tufts University Dental School in 1961, he returned to Barre to open his dental practice in the same building of his dad's medical office, retiring in 1988.

Hunting and fishing in Vermont, Maine and Canada, gathering wild spring mushrooms and being an official scorer of the Boone and Crockett Club were very special interests. Roddy was also an accomplished painter, his first portrait being of his father, which he completed while in dental school, as well as a portrait of President Obama, which was sent to the White House with a thank-you note from the president and his wife in return.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Joni and Joseph V. Calcagni, and two grandsons, Joseph G. and Vincent R. Calcagni, all of Barre Town; two stepdaughters, Jane Cavazza and her husband, David, of Uxbridge, Mass., and Kathy Ann Haynes of Rochester, N.Y.; and stepson Richard Carpenter of Barre City; and several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also surviving is his brother, Charles H. Goyette Jr., M.D., and his wife, Meri, of Nashua, N.H.; and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Beside his parents, he was predeceased by his wives, Teresa Aja Goyette and Muriel Carpenter Goyette; as well as his sister, Margaret Goyette Greenough; and nephew Robert Goyette.

His life will be honored and celebrated Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at the convenience of his family in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St. in Barre.

Interment will be made in the Hope Cemetery.

There are no calling hours.

Yes, he was our family dentist however, to me, he was so much more. Yes, he so loved his fishing and hunting trips to Moosehead Lake in Greenville, Maine, but he also enjoyed his Vermont visitors even more. He well knew the effort it took for each of them to make that very long trip to his humble abode on Moosehead Lake. He loved talking about the moose, deer, bear, partridge, pine martins, wolves, coyotes, and scores of birds he had seen in the midst of some 50 square miles of what he termed as, "Some of the most beautiful lakes, rivers, streams, and mountains within a vast wilderness few in Vermont have ever witnessed." It was not uncommon for him to share his fondness for the Roach Ponds, both Wilsons, or his varied experiences on the Golden Road. He was a man who deeply loved his family, especially his parents, and he often proudly related so many stories from his youth to his adulthood and into his senior years. He always shared them with a wry sense of humor coupled with a slight grin. He thoroughly enjoyed married life and absolutely adored his daughter, Joanie. He remembered his classmates, and he also remembered his father sliding down Park Street at a time when rollers were used instead of street plows during the winter months. He graduated in the Old Spaulding High School, now, a museum for the State of Vermont. In fact, I even found out that he went to school with my mother. He was a person with whom you could chat with, for hours on end about almost any subject, and he would never grow tired of the company he was keeping. Yes, his hobbies included painting (the painting of his father adorned his Park Street waiting room for decades), hunting, fishing, and measuring antlers and other Boone & Crockett trophies after their proper drying periods. I just want you all to know that he was so much more than this. He was one of the finest people (in every way) I ever had the good fortune to meet or know. Much love and prayers to his daughter Joanie, her family, and to other surviving family members and friends.
