Gary Dean Sommerfeld

Gary Dean Sommerfeld, age 73, passed away on October 4, 2018 at Accel in Longmont, CO. Gary was born February 21, 1945 in Newton, Kansas to Edwin and Justina (Dirks) Sommerfeld. Growing up, he was a hard worker and received many awards in school including a Meritorious Award for baseball, basketball and track. In 1963, Gary graduated from Cassody Rural High School in Kansas and earned an Associate's in Arts degree from Arkansas City Junior College in 1965. On November 29, 1985 he married Carol Hill. In 1992 he, Carol and their two children moved to Longmont, Colorado from Sandy, Utah. Gary worked for Pipe Valve and Fitting CO after college where he began in sales and remained there for over 43 years and retired as the President of the company in 2010. Gary loved auctions, collecting antiques, and guns. He enjoyed westerns, bull riding, riding ATV's, being outdoors and watching the wildlife and traveling the United States. Gary was an avid CU Buffs fan and attended their games for many years. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and tried to attend all of his grandkids events. Gary was a very dedicated father, husband and grandfather and always provided everything he could for his family. He was loved by many and will truly be missed. Gary is preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife of 32 years, Carol Sommerfeld, one brother, Myron Sommerfeld and one sister, Alice Sommerfeld Thiessen. He is survived by his children, Michael Morey and Christina (Shane) Tyre, five grandchildren; Dayne, Kaleb and Connor Tyre, Jakob and Cierra Morey, and two brothers, Winston (Janice) Sommerfeld and Melvin (Lynn) Sommerfeld. A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 25 at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, 326 Terry Street, Longmont, CO 80501. Following the service, a reception will be held at the Elk's Lodge to continue the celebration of Gary's life. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org.
