Myrtle Gibbs Obituary

Myrtle Whittaker Gibbs, 83, of Ellijay, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, Sept. 6, 2025, at her residence.

She was born Oct. 27, 1941, in Trenton, N.J., to the late Leon Hamilton Hewitt and Caroline Fox Hewitt.

She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who dedicated her life to raising and nurturing her family with love, strength and grace. Her home was always filled with warmth, laughter and the values she held dear.

A faithful member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church of Ellijay, she loved the Lord dearly and lived her life as a shining example of Christian faith.

Her kindness, gentle spirit and unwavering devotion to those she loved will be remembered always.

She is preceded in death by brother, Luke Hewitt and sister, Carol Pezzi.

She is survived by husband of 66 years, Norman Edward Gibbs Jr., of Ellijay; sons and daughters-in-law, the Rev. Norman Edward Gibbs III and Ginger, Ronald Leon Gibbs and Pam, and Brian Gibbs, all of Ellijay; daughter, Donna Myrtle Gibbs, of Ellijay; brother and sister-in-law, Jerry Hewitt and Madeleine, of Tenn.; sister, Debby Pezzi of Nashville, Tenn.; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

To honor her wishes, she will have a private funeral service with her son, the Rev. Norman Gibbs III officiating.

Interment will follow in Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Jasper.

Bernhardt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
