Sharon Ryan Askins, 81, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2025, at Pruitt Health in Durham, N.C.
She was born Dec. 26, 1943, in Walnut Ridge, to the late Andrew Jackson Ryan Jr. and Mercedes Thennes Ryan. Ms. Askins grew up in Walnut Ridge, and graduated from Walnut Ridge High School in 1961. She went on to attend St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing in Memphis, graduating in 1964.
She spent most of her adult life in Fayetteville, N.C., where she was very involved in the community. She was an active member of the Junior League of Fayetteville, serving as President from 1981-1982. Sharon went on to have a career in optical sales with Tura Eyewear and Charmant USA.
She loved her four-legged friends, most recently her beloved "Poodleboy" Rusty, and two cats, both named Sweetheart. She had many beloved pets during her life. She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.
In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her brothers, Jack Ryan, Timothy Ryan and Maurice Ryan.
Ms. Askins is survived by her daughters, Andrea "Holly" Askins Hardy of Charleston, S.C., and Michelle "Shelly" Askins Thompson (Michael) of Raleigh, N.C.; son, James "Jay" Holloway Askins Jr. (Emily) of Hendersonville, N.C.; grandchildren, James Holloway Askins III and Ryan Whitley Thompson; sisters, Mary Ryan, Marie Ryan and June Duckworth (Stan-dec); brothers, Terry Ryan (Regina) and Mark Ryan; and sisters-in-law, Teresa Ryan and Shelia Ryan; and many nieces and nephews.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to your favorite animal shelter.
