Albert Knapp Obituary

Albert "Bert" Sheldon Knapp

Albert "Bert" Sheldon Knapp, 84, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2025. Born on June 9, 1941, in Syracuse, New York, Bert was the son of the late Albert Stanley Ward Knapp and Agnes Elizabeth Cocks Knapp. He was also preceded in death by his parents and his older brother and sister-in-law, John Franklin Knapp (Maria). In 1956, Bert moved with his family to Hopewell, Virginia, where he graduated from Hopewell High School. While pursuing his degree at RPI, he met the love of his life, Jean Marie Andrews Knapp. Together, they shared a devoted and joyful marriage that spanned 64 years. In addition to his wife, Bert is survived by his daughters, Joanne Wilcox (Fred) and Sherry Knapp (Stuart Carr); grandchildren, Sarah Large (Frankie), Christopher Wilcox (Alexa), Madison Carr, and Benjamin Carr; great-grandchildren, Frankie Large III and Clayton Large; niece, Ana Knapp (Michael Conrad); and nephew, John Knapp (Angie). A proud family man and loyal friend, Bert was a longtime and dedicated member of the Masonic fraternity, serving nearly 60 years with Richmond Lodge #10 and Meridian Lodge #248. He was also a member of the Mechanicsville Ruritan Club, where he especially enjoyed the annual "Shuk' n Pul." Bert had a deep appreciation for history and was an avid collector of memorabilia and historical artifacts. He loved golfing, gardening, and long walks on the beach with his metal detector in hand. A die-hard college sports fan, he especially loved cheering on the UVA Cavaliers-often with great passion (and volume).

A celebration of life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Masonic Lodge #344 in support of educational initiatives in the community Bert held so dear: Washington and Henry Lodge #344, P.O. Box 61, Mechanicsville, Va. 23111, (Memo: College Scholarship Fund). Online condolences may be registered at bennettfuneralhomes.com

My condolences to Joanne, her mom and all of their family. It was not until I read Bert's obituary that I realized that Bert and I believe I worked for the same Electrical Contractor many years ago. My wife and I will pray for peace and comfort during this time of grief.
