Dear Cindy, I'm sure you will not remember us; but before you were married; my husband and I were celebrating our anniversary at the pub in downtown Richmond; and were delighted and mesmerized by your beautiful, lyrical voice and the obvious love you shared between you. Once you discovered we were there celebrating our anniversary, you presented us with a copy of your record....yes....that's how long ago it was.....and later that year my husband Bob and I invited you over to our house for steaks on the grill for Bob's birthday; and you did us the honor of coming and singing for us. Of course this was before your career really took off; the two of you were wed; and we have been your fans, have come by Rare Ol Times fairly frequently to dine and to enjoy the wonderful Irish music. As years went by; we weren't fortunate enough to see you very often due to your taking care of your sons; but I wanted you to know that the world is a sadder place without Andy; and to convey our profound and sincere condolences and assure you that our hearts, our love and our prayers are with you, Kevin and Conner during this difficult time; and remind you that, Andy has just gone ahead to be with our Heavenly Father, and we'll all see him again in Glory. In prayers and sincere condolences, Carolyn and Bob Williams

Cindy, Linq and I were so sorry to hear that you have lost your wonderful Andy. The world seems different today, knowing he is gone. we loved and appreciated your talents since the early days at Matt's Pub and then seeing you evolve at Rare Old Times. Your husband was so specia as well you know, I remember one day on St. Paddy's day, my 82 year old Mom who couldn't get out anymore was dying for some Corned Beef and Cabbage, you know the real deal. I came up and tried to get an order to go and the gentleman said, they were only serving that day at the restaurant. Andy overheard the conversation and immediately said, wait a moment, and came back with a huge, delicious order for me to take to my Mom, and said it was on him, and to have a grand day! I never forgot his kindness. You sounded like an angel when you sang with him in those good old days, we could never get enough of Andy and Cindy!! I am so sorry for the loss you and your children are going through, but know that you are not alone in your grief and that you and Andy were a special gift to us and a memory we will cherish forever. Heaven must be rockin by now!

Richmond's Fiddler of Dooney
I have crossed the sea to Ireland,
and kissed the Blarney Stone.
Climbed the volcanic formation of the Giant's Causeway. Marveling at the glorious costal cliffs as seagulls screeched in harmony to the striking cymbals of angry seas; whipping and crashing against the jagged rocks.
I have stood deminished before the Rock of Cashel.
Tasted the North Sea's salty sting.
Been swathed in aromatic tingels of
mystic dampness spewed from the mysterious Glens of Antrim.
Genuflected at St. Patrick's Cathedral.
Viewed the Book of Kells at Trinity College.
Journeyed through Sligo where Yeats rests.
And finally, saldly journeyed back to America and eventually Richmond.
And always with a hunger and longing for Erin.
Who knew that there was already rich fodder here.
A young seedling, blown in by the winds of will,
A Celtic diamond in the rough
was taking root in "Downtown Shortpump".
This sapling persevered and continued
to take hold in Richmond's Celtic
starved Soil.
Season after Season
Standing quietly and steady
Withstanding fierce winds, periods
of drought and torrential rains.
Flourishing and, like Hans Christian
Andersen's Pied Piper of old, charming and willingly enthralling us all.
Maturing into a magnificent oak.
Embracing Cindy and later Kevin and Conner.
Still remembering Lynn, Gavin and Mick.
And thereafter Sam, Finn, Ava and Ceala.
Celtic mythology depicts the oak tree
as the tree of doors.
Gateway between two worlds
A place where portals could be erected.
Lucky were we that this Celtic Gem,
"Richmond's Fiddler of Dooney"
chanced to grace our door
and created a community for us at
Rare Olde Times
He nourished our bodies and our souls
And never failed to warm our hearts.
America says thank you Hazel, Sylvia, David, Philip, Gerald, Kenneth,
Terry, Madeleine, Peter and Avril
for sharing with us the gift of your
brother.
Weren't we special.
Weren't we special to have called him
Friend!
Dia Qhuit!
Slan leat!

I am sad for all of those folks who never got the chance to meet him.

Dear Cindy,
I was tremendously saddened to learn of Andy's passing...yet I smile and think of what he must be saying to Martin and a few of his "regulars" in Heaven. Hopefully he is singing and laughing and looking-sheepishly like he knew something that everyone else didn't. . . . just the way I will always remember him.
God has a new entertainer...and Good Lad at that!!

Dear Cindy and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Andy was a great publican, a great musician, and a great friend to all his regulars. My fondest memories of Andy are those times in the last years of my Mother's life when I would bring her into Rare Olde Times. She absolutely loved the music, and Andy's special gift to her was to sing whatever her request was that evening. (usually an Elvis song.) His voice was like velvet, and she cherished those moments. I will always be grateful to him for those little gifts that brightened her difficult and painful final years. I'm sure he's singing in the Heavens now.

Andy's Persona:
Kindness, Love, Humor with an accent, Giving, Family proudness, Sensitivity, Most definitive political opinions
His true angel, Cindy, brought out the very best in him and they, as a couple, have given to others first, always. He always beamed when talking about his kids and his beautiful wife. After returning a trip to Ireland, he told us when Cindy sang there, the room went silent in awe. He guessed he had gotten used to her voice until he was an audience member among the many great singers of Dublin. He was so very proud of her and fell in love, once again. He loved his family and he loved his friends and we will always love him.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Carole and I have known Andy and Cindy since they became Andy and Cindy (or Cindy and Andy, as they were known in Northern Virginia). Andy was one of the most personable people anyone ever met. His distinctive style of singing was a delight and quite unique...you could hear Ireland in his every note. As a singer, he made no attempt to "Americanize" his sound. He just sung from the heart and let the streets of Dublin, Galway Bay, and the hills and valleys of that beautiful island come through. At the same time, he gave his adopted country, the USA, the best of his talent, his humanity, and knack for making people happy. We are truly sorry to hear that he is no longer with us, but we will not forget his friendship and hope that wherever he is singing now, he will remember ours.

I first heard Andy and Cindy sing waaaay back in the 1980s at Matt's Pib in Shockoe Slip. I purchased all the "cassette tapes" they sold that night in the pub. For years afterward I enjoyed their songs during the annual Highland Games & Celtic Festivals, Saint Patrick' s Irish festival in Church Hill (Along with Page Wilson's), and of course in their Rare Olde Times Irish Public House. I never tired of listening to Andy's soulful Irish voice (and humor) and Cindy's "Danny Boy". I purchased all their available CDs sold through the pub. I even almost got married their in the pub. But, when that did not work out, friends took our place. I have the Uisce Beatha CD from their wedding. For a time, I was a member of the "Team Guinness" (founded by Greg Stevens) which met there regularily, whom Martin was also a member. I never felt more closely connected with my ancestors than when at the pub. And, when I met my wife Wendy, the first place we went together was Rare Olde Times on New Years Eve. Even though I was living in Chesapeake at the time, and had to drive back afterwards. My wife's previous husband died of cancer, and Andy allowed us (he installed it for us) to place a plaque in Carl's memory at the end of the bar. Rare Olde Times was a Saint Patrick's Day tradition for me since they opened the pub. I have made many friends at the pub. And, I know that they are all heartbroken, as am I. Andy was a one of a kind. God bless him, his family, and his friends. I miss him.

I guess it was 20 years ago when someone gave me a tape of Irish Music by "Andy and Cindy the Irish Rose and the Rogue." It was from this tape that I developed a love of Irish Music in general. Living in Richmond I was then able to go to the pub and be entertained by Them Some over the years. The world has lost a good singer and musician in Andy. My condolences to his loved one.
