Angelo Jimenez-Squires Obituary

JIMENEZ-SQUIRES, Angelo, died suddenly and peacefully November 22, 2022, at his home in Henrico County. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Angelo was blessed to be a member of a U.S. Air Force family and grew up around the world in Panama, Mississippi and Madrid, Spain. In the 1970s, he settled in Richmond, and with the exception of a year in New York City, he spent his life here, becoming a stalwart of the city's LGBT community.

In 2013, Angelo married his old friend, Jay Squires, in a New York ceremony, at a time when their union was illegal in Virginia. He and Jay traveled regularly from New York to Richmond, becoming unmarried as they crossed the Potomac and entered Virginia. The reverse happened on the return trip north. Angelo and Jay would share a kiss at each northward crossing, celebrating the renewal of their union every time the law once again met reality. In this way, they were married many times when their right to be married was the subject of litigation nationwide.

Angelo was a congregant at Metropolitan Community Church of Richmond and one of the first members of Prime Timers Central Virginia. He loved to attend LGBT Pride events along the east coast, including Richmond, New York and D.C.

Angelo was a licensed cosmetologist for more than 30 years. He and Jay

shared their Henrico home with three contented rescue cats, Kosmo,

Smoochie and Lily.

He is survived by his husband, Jay Squires; mother, Gloria Dixon;

sister, Nilsa Jimenez; and nephews, Joey Roe and Paul Jimenez, all of

Richmond.

Angelo's friends will remember his easy smile, quick laugh and the

eagerness with which he approached efforts that benefited his friends

and neighbors. He was generous with his love and with his resources,

helping many in need along his path in life.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, December 4, at the West

Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 West Broad St., where a service celebrating Angelo's life will be held at 12 noon Tuesday, December 6. Burial will follow in Hanover Memorial Park.

I miss your smile, the attention to detail, your love of being around friends and all the fun. You and I had fun taking pictures at parties. Love and miss you my friend.
