Anna Netherland Obituary
July 8, 1941 - September 20, 2024
Anna Bartley Netherland, a beloved wife and mother, passed away on September 20, 2024, after a long battle with multiple illnesses. Anna was born on July 8th, 1941, in Haysi, VA, to Riley and Edith Bartley. She is survived by the love of her life, Gordon Netherland; sons, Mark (Laura) and Benjamin Netherland; grandson, Chris Norby (Erin); great-grandsons, Conner and Owen Norby; and brother, Dwight Bartley.
Anna was raised in a large family with four brothers and many cousins, aunts and uncles. She, Gordon and sons made many holiday trips to southwest Virginia to visit family in her hometown.
Anna was a dedicated elementary school teacher. She attended Radford College and graduated in three years with a degree in elementary education. She enjoyed teaching math and science. Anna loved all of her students. They were very important to her. During retirement, she enjoyed attending lunches with her fellow retirees.
Anna was a longtime member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church. She served as a Stephen Minister, a care giving ministry. She visited people at The Hermitage, in homes and care facilities many times. Anna greatly enjoyed a trip to the Holy Land with fellow church members.
Anna also loved traveling throughout this country and much of Europe.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 1, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road, with visiting at 10 a.m. and service at 11 a.m. Interment will be at a later date.

I always enjoyed planning writing lesson plans with her. As a reading specialist, I became part of the delivery-especially in the unit on writing poetry. Anna was a delightful person and a dedicated teacher. The family has my deepest sympathy.

I am sorry to hear of Anna's passing. We worked together when she taught at Hopkins Road Elementary. She was a delightful teacher and person to be around.
