Anne Hardage Obituary

HARDAGE, Anne Heath, died on April 30, 2024, in Richmond, VA. She was born on October 31, 1942, in Charlotte, N.C. to the late M. Lee Heath and Anne Purnell Heath. She was also preceded in death by her brother M. Lee Heath, Jr. She attended Charlotte public schools and graduated from St. Mary's Preparatory School in Raleigh, NC., and Salem College in Winston-Salem, NC. She taught history and economics at various schools in Virginia and North Carolina before moving to Richmond in the late 1960s. After raising her two daughters, Morgan and Heath, she worked for the Richmond law firm Sands, Anderson before devoting herself to managing real estate she owned. She also served on the Board of Directors of Manetta Mills, a family textile firm in Lando, SC.

Anne was President of the Richmond Junior League from 1979 to 1980. She was twice a member of the St. Stephen's Episcopal Church Vestry, and she was also a trustee of the church's endowment fund. In addition, she was a trustee of the Westminster Canterbury Foundation and the Diocesan Missionary Society of the Episcopal Church. She was on the Board of Directors of Metro Leadership Richmond, The Woman's Club, The Bolling Haxall House Foundation, The Colonial Dames of America of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and The Virginia Institute for Pastoral Care. She was a member of the Boxwood Garden Club, The Country Club of Virginia, and her beloved mah jongg, bridge, tennis, and book club groups.

Anne is survived by her daughter, Heath Hardage Lee, and her husband James Christopher Lee of Roanoke; her daughter, Morgan Hardage Engel, and her husband Matthew Brendon Engel of Richmond, as well as her five grandchildren: Anne Alston Lee, James Hawkins Lee, Isabelle Morgan Engel, Matthew Brendon Engel, Jr., and Heath Owen Engel. In addition, she is survived by many treasured relatives and friends.

Funeral services are private and for family only. A celebration of life reception will be held at the Country Club of Virginia's Westhampton Clubhouse in Richmond on Sunday, May 19 from 3 to 5:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be sent to Massey Cancer Center and designated to Head/Neck and Thyroid Cancer in honor of Dr. Laurence Dinardo.
