Anne Tilghman Obituary

Anne Arrington Tilghman, "Tilly," was born on July 14, 1944. She attended Saint Catherine's School and was a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill. She passed away peacefully on Christmas Day at 11:11 a.m., surrounded by her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her brother Richard Tilghman, her daughters Helen and Katherine, and her grandchildren. In the 1970s, she moved to Manhattan and embraced life as a New Yorker with gusto, becoming an educator at the Birch Wathen School and a volunteer with the New York City Ballet. Anne left an indelible mark through her charitable work with Habitat for Humanity, Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, Independence Savings Bank Foundation, and later, the Maggie L. Walker Governor's School. Her favorite place was in her beach chair, toes in the sand close to the waterline in Morehead, N.C., with her family. Anne leaves a legacy of clever wit and an appreciation for the arts-particularly a really good book. She was always known for her bright, affable greetings to all she crossed paths with and her love of music, which she naturally passed on to her children, who consider it a profound honor to have been her daughters. She was ahead of her time. Those who knew her were fortunate to be touched by her thoughtful grace and contagious charm. There will be a memorial service in early April held at the chapel in Westminster Canterbury.
